Chapter 4 - The Digital Fingerprint

Clara gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, her knuckles turning stark white as she stared at Marcus Vance. The amber liquid in his glass swirled lazily as he took another measured sip, completely unfazed by the devastation surrounding them.
"My digital signature can be spoofed," Clara said, her voice steadying through sheer adrenaline. "Anyone with root access to the corporate server could have pushed those entries through under my credentials. You know how the IT infrastructure is structured, Marcus. You managed the server migration last quarter."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his otherwise indifferent features before vanishing behind a mask of cold corporate diplomacy. "Careful, Clara. Accusing your former brother-in-law of cyber tampering without a shred of forensic proof is a fast track to a defamation countersuit—or worse, a prison cell."
"I have the server logs backed up on an external drive," Clara bluffed, though her mind raced to remember where she had left her portable hard drive. It was in her apartment, currently locked inside a safe that Eleanor’s security team was likely already raiding.
Marcus let out a short, dry laugh that lacked any real humor. "If you had a drive, you wouldn't be standing here in a five-thousand-dollar wedding dress crying in an empty VIP room. You'd already be at a police precinct. But let's be honest—even if you did have logs, who do you think the board of directors is going to believe? A disgraced startup founder with a history of cash flow emergencies, or the Vance family?"
Clara felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. She realized then that this wasn't just an impulsive reaction to a financial disagreement; it was a premeditated execution. They had used the wedding as a public spectacle to isolate her, strip her of her social standing, and cut off her access to corporate resources all at once.
"Why?" Clara whispered, her eyes burning with unshed tears. "If Julian loved me—even if he doubted the finances—why do it this way? Why ruin me publicly?"
Marcus stepped into the room, closing the heavy oak door behind him with a soft, ominous click. He set his whiskey glass down on the edge of the desk, leaning in close so she could smell the expensive scotch and faint hint of cedar on his collar.
"Because Julian was ready to sign over voting shares of the holding company to you as a wedding gift," Marcus said quietly, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. "And some of us couldn't let a liability like you take control of the family empire."
Before Clara could process the confession, the door burst open behind Marcus, and a breathless security guard rushed into the room, holding a flashing tablet.

"Mr. Vance, you need to see this," the guard blurted out, ignoring Clara entirely. "The SEC just flagged the holding company's primary account. Fifty million dollars has just been transferred to an offshore shell corporation under Julian's name."
