Chapter 8

Within forty-eight hours of the simultaneous raids on the Sterling estate and corporate headquarters, the story broke across national news networks, sending shockwaves through the financial world. Headlines blared across cable news screens: Sterling Corporation Implicated in Massive Federal RICO Probe; Billionaire Heir Arrested. Social media platforms erupted with discussions, memes, and outraged commentary detailing the rise and sudden collapse of the city's most prominent dynasty.

Elena sat quietly in David’s living room, watching the television news broadcast as an anchor detailed the staggering scale of the fraud charges. Footage of federal agents carrying boxes of evidence out of the grand estate played on a loop, juxtaposed with images of Julian being led out of his corporate offices in handcuffs. For the first time in days, the heavy knot in Elena’s chest loosened completely. The world was finally seeing the truth behind the polished facade.

Her phone, which had been set to silent and placed in a drawer, vibrated continuously with automated alert notifications. Among them, however, were missed calls and text messages from unknown numbers—reporters attempting to secure exclusive interviews, distant acquaintances expressing sudden concern, and legal representatives from corporate competitors looking for insider information. She ignored them all. She had no desire to become a media celebrity or a public spectacle. Her goal had never been revenge for the sake of fame; it was simply justice, closure, and the reclamation of her own life.

David walked in from the small kitchen, holding a fresh cup of coffee and looking at her with a mixture of awe and protective concern. "The news vans are starting to crowd the end of the street, Elena. A few reporters managed to track down your registration history through your old apartment. It won't be long before they figure out you're staying here."

Elena looked up from the screen, her expression calm and composed. "Then it’s time for us to move again, David. Just temporarily. Marcus arranged for a secure safe house upstate through the DOJ witness protection liaisons until my formal deposition is completed."

"Are you ready for this?" David asked softly, sitting down on the edge of the sofa beside her. "Once you step into that courtroom to testify against Julian and Clara, there’s no turning back into the background. Your name will be permanently tied to the biggest corporate takedown of the decade."

"I was never afraid of the truth, David," Elena replied, looking out the window toward the distant city skyline where the Sterling towers stood as monuments to corporate greed. "What I was afraid of was losing myself in a life built on lies. Walking away from that mansion with my suitcase was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it was also the most liberating. I’m ready to finish what I started."
