Chapter 5

The rain had started again, tapping a steady, restless rhythm against the tinted windows of an unmarked federal vehicle parked two blocks away from the DOJ field office. Inside the car, the dim interior light illuminated the heavy leather ledger resting between Elena and Agent Vance. Vance, a middle-aged man with sharp gray eyes and an expression carved from granite, slowly turned the pages of the book, his gaze lingering on the meticulously detailed entries.
"If this ledger is authentic," Vance said quietly, not looking up from the page, "it’s the missing puzzle piece we’ve been looking for to connect the Sterling Corporation’s real estate acquisitions to the illegal municipal kickbacks. It’s enough to secure search warrants for every corporate office they own."
"It’s authentic," Elena said, her voice firm and calm. "Every signature, every account number, every date matches the internal database I accessed before leaving the estate. I’ve also included a sworn affidavit detailing my personal involvement and Julian’s direct orders regarding the falsification of the quarterly audits."
Vance closed the ledger with a soft thud and looked directly at Elena. "You realize what this means, don’t you? Once these warrants are executed, there’s no turning back. The Sterling family will know exactly who provided the evidence. Your life as you knew it is officially over."
"My life as they wanted it to be was over the moment they handed me that bucket of water," Elena replied without a moment of hesitation. "I am ready to sign the official deposition whenever you need me to."

Agent Vance nodded slowly, a flicker of genuine respect crossing his stern features. "Alright. We’ll execute the search warrants tomorrow morning at dawn, simultaneously hitting their downtown headquarters and their private estate. I’ll have federal marshals assigned to monitor your location for your own protection. Don't answer your phone, don't open the door for anyone you don't know, and stay in constant contact with Marcus."
Ten minutes later, Elena stepped out of the vehicle and walked briskly back toward David’s car through the cool evening drizzle. The weight of what they had just set into motion hung heavily in the air, but the paralyzing anxiety that had gripped her since wedding night was entirely gone. She had crossed the Rubicon. There was no retreating into the shadows now. The federal machinery was moving, and by tomorrow morning, the untouchable Sterling family would finally have to answer for their crimes in a court of law.
