Chapter 11

The heavy knock on the wooden door of the safe house broke the quiet morning stillness. It wasn't the coded double-tap of Marcus or the familiar knock of the assigned federal marshals. Elena paused, her pen hovering over the legal document she was reviewing at the dining table, while David instantly stood up, moving silently toward the entrance with his hand ready on the lock.
Through the narrow window beside the door, David spotted Agent Vance standing alone on the porch, his coat dusted with light morning snow and a grave expression etched across his face. David immediately unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open, letting the investigator inside out of the cold.
"Agent Vance," Elena said, standing up from the table. "Is there a problem with Tuesday’s deposition?"
Vance shook his head, stepping into the warm living room and setting a thick manila folder down on the table. "Not with the deposition itself, Elena. But the Sterling legal team has just filed an emergency motion demanding your immediate personal presence at a preliminary injunction hearing tomorrow morning, ahead of the standard schedule."
David frowned, crossing his arms defensively. "Why would they demand an early hearing? If the deposition is scheduled for next week, they’re clearly trying to blindside us before our legal team has fully prepared the rebuttal to their character smear campaign."
"Exactly," Vance replied grimly. "Clara Sterling’s high-priced defense attorneys have managed to secure a sympathetic magistrate judge who agreed to hear their emergency petition regarding alleged asset misappropriation. They want you in that courtroom tomorrow morning to put you on the defensive under oath, hoping to rattle you before the federal RICO trial even begins."
Elena looked down at the manila folder, feeling a sudden surge of adrenaline rather than fear. For days, she had been hiding away in safe houses and digital silos, letting lawyers and investigators handle the bureaucratic battle. But the thought of walking back into a public courtroom—of looking Clara and Julian directly in the eye—triggered a powerful, instinctive desire to confront them face-to-face.

"Let them schedule the hearing," Elena said calmly, her voice carrying a quiet strength that made both men turn to look at her in surprise. "If they want to question my character under oath, I will give them the truth. I am not hiding anymore."
Vance studied her face for a long moment, searching for any sign of hesitation or doubt. Finding none, a slow, approving nod crossed his stern features. "That’s the spirit they aren't expecting, Elena. They think you’re still the intimidated bride they bullied in that parlor. Tomorrow, you show them who is actually in control."
