Chapter 2

The apartment smelled of old paper, strong coffee, and the comforting, familiar scent of lavender laundry detergent. It was worlds away from the towering ceilings and polished marble floors of the Sterling estate, but to Elena, the small living room felt like a fortress. David had wasted no time getting her here, bypassing hospitals or police stations in favor of the third-floor walk-up he shared with no one. He had quietly insisted she strip off the freezing wedding dress, wrapping her shoulders in a thick, woolen quilt before handing her a steaming mug of peppermint tea.
Elena sat on the edge of the worn velvet sofa, her hands wrapped tightly around the ceramic mug. The warmth seeped slowly into her numb fingers, helping to steady the lingering tremors in her body. David stood by the small kitchen counter, leaning against the wooden surface with a look of deep concentration etched across his face. He watched her carefully, giving her the space she desperately needed while remaining close enough to offer protection if the ghosts of her past suddenly materialized at his door.
"They’ll notice the ring is missing before the night is over," Elena said, her voice barely louder than a whisper, yet it cut sharply through the quiet apartment. "Clara treats every asset in that house like a museum piece. When she finds that diamond sitting in the dirt, the panic won't be about me leaving. It will be about what I might know."
David crossed his arms, his expression tightening. "Let them panic, Elena. But we need to be realistic. The Sterlings own half the real estate developers and municipal judges in this state. If you just walk away and stay silent, they will control the narrative. They will paint you as unstable, hysterical, a runaway bride who cracked under the pressure of high society."
"I have the ledger," Elena replied, looking up to meet his gaze directly.
David’s eyes widened slightly, the casual posture evaporating instantly. "The ledger? You actually managed to take it from Julian's private study?"
Elena nodded slowly, the memory of slipping the leather-bound book into the lining of her suitcase flashing through her mind. It had been her wedding gift to herself—not diamonds, but hard evidence of corporate fraud, bribery, and systematic exploitation that the Sterling Corporation had buried for decades. Julian had foolishly left his safe unlocked during the chaos of the rehearsal dinner, assuming his brand-new bride was too starry-eyed and intimidated to look twice at his business affairs. He had underestimated her intelligence, mistaking her quiet demeanor for weakness.
"It details every payoff, every silenced whistleblower, and every illegal land grab that built their empire," Elena said softly. "Julian thought he was marrying a quiet trophy to decorate his arm at charity galas. He had no idea I spent the last three years auditing corporate accounts for the state’s forensic bureau before we even met. I wasn't targeted by accident, David. I was chosen because they thought I was naive enough to control."

"And now you have the smoking gun," David murmured, walking over to sit in the armchair opposite her. A grim, appreciative smile touched the corners of his mouth. "They thought they were breaking you with that bucket of water tonight. They had no idea they were just waking up a sleeping giant."
"They wanted to humiliate me into submission," Elena said, her jaw tightening as the humiliation morphed into cold, focused anger. "They wanted me to scrub the floor of their grand parlor to prove I understood my place in their dynasty. But all it did was wash away the last shred of hesitation I had. I’m not running away to hide, David. I’m preparing for war."
