Chapter 7

The interrogation room at the federal field office was stark, windowless, and chilled by industrial air conditioning. Under the harsh glare of an overhead fluorescent light, Julian Sterling sat at the metal table, his bespoke dark suit looking strangely out of place in the sterile environment. His hands were cuffed loosely to a steel loop bolted to the table surface, and his face was a mask of cold arrogance, though a subtle twitch in his jaw betrayed his growing panic.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Agent Vance walked in, accompanied by a federal prosecutor named Sarah Jenkins. They sat down opposite Julian, placing a thick stack of forensic accounting reports and printed email transcripts between them.
"Let’s not waste time playing games, Mr. Sterling," Prosecutor Jenkins said, opening the file. "We have complete access to your offshore accounts, your shell companies, and the internal accounting logs that detail every illegal payoff made over the past five years. Furthermore, we have a sworn eyewitness testimony detailing how you personally directed the falsification of corporate audits."
Julian scoffed, leaning back in his chair with a practiced, dismissive smile. "You’re talking about unsubstantiated claims from a disgruntled runaway who was unstable from the moment she walked into this family. Any competent defense attorney will rip those documents apart in federal court as fabricated hearsay."
"Fabricated?" Vance leaned forward, placing a single photograph on the table. It was a high-resolution scan of a signed authorization memo, bearing Julian’s exact signature and private corporate seal, approving a massive bribe to a municipal zoning board member. "This memo was retrieved from your private digital safe, encrypted with a key that only you and your wife possessed. Except, as forensic data proves, your wife didn't just have access to the safe—she was the one who systematically audited your illegal transactions while you thought she was just a pretty face to display at parties."
Julian’s smile faltered, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the document. The realization that Elena had not been a naive bystander, but an analytical mind quietly dismantling his entire operation from the inside, hit him with the force of a physical blow.
"She used you, Julian," Jenkins added quietly, watching his reaction closely. "She let you expose your own corruption because she understood that the only way to stop a predator like you was to build an airtight legal case that your money could never buy your way out of."

"She’s my wife," Julian muttered through clenched teeth, the mask of arrogance completely slipping away to reveal raw, unadulterated fury. "She took vows. She swore loyalty."
"And you showed her how much those vows meant when you stood by and watched your mother humiliate her on your wedding day," Vance said, his voice hard as iron. "You thought power meant you could treat human beings like dirt. Now you get to find out what happens when the dirt fights back."
