Chapter 10

The safe house provided by the DOJ was a modest, isolated cabin nestled deep within the pine forests upstate. Surrounded by towering trees and thick layers of damp earth, the location offered absolute physical security and complete isolation from the relentless media circus in the city. Two federal marshals maintained a constant, unobtrusive vigil in a vehicle parked down the winding gravel driveway, ensuring that no uninvited visitors could approach unnoticed.

Inside the warm, wood-paneled living room, Elena sat by the stone fireplace, a thick wool blanket draped over her shoulders as she read through a fresh packet of legal transcripts sent by Marcus via encrypted tablet. The crackling of the burning logs provided a soothing background sound, helping to quiet the constant hum of anxiety that had accompanied her since the day of the wedding.

David walked in from the small kitchen carrying two mugs of hot coffee, handing one to Elena before taking a seat in the armchair opposite her. "Marcus called a few minutes ago. The Sterling legal team is shifting their strategy. They’ve stopped trying to deny the financial fraud—the evidence is simply too overwhelming for that. Now, they’re focusing entirely on character assassination."

Elena took a slow sip of her coffee, her expression remaining entirely calm. "Let me guess. They’re claiming I engineered the entire corporate scheme from the beginning and framed Julian to steal company assets."

David raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Spot on. They’ve dug up an old college research paper you wrote on corporate governance and are trying to spin it as a premeditated blueprint for financial manipulation. They’re also digging into your family history, trying to paint you as an opportunist who married into the family solely for social advancement."

"They are desperate," Elena said softly, setting her mug down on the wooden coffee table. "When powerful people lose control of their environment, their first instinct is to destroy the credibility of anyone who exposed their flaws. But desperation doesn't hold up against a mountain of forensic bank records and signed authorization memos."

"Agent Vance is confident that the judge will throw out their character smears during the pre-trial motions," David added, leaning forward earnestly. "He wants you to prepare your formal deposition for next Tuesday. Once that deposition is locked in under oath, the trial date will be set, and Julian will have to face a federal jury with no legal defense left."

Elena looked out the window, watching the silent snowfall begin to drift down through the dense pine branches. The contrast between this quiet, peaceful cabin and the chaotic, gilded cage of the Sterling estate could not have been more striking. She had traded wealth, status, and luxury for truth, freedom, and peace of mind. And as she looked ahead to the coming trial, she knew she had made the right choice. There was no fear left in her heart—only a deep, unwavering resolve to see justice carried out to its absolute conclusion.
