Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Witness

The double doors didn't just open; they swung wide with a sharp, echoing bang that startled everyone in the foyer. Standing in the threshold was not a confused wedding guest, but a towering, middle-aged man in a sharp gray trench coat, his face hardened by years of legal enforcement and cold reality. Behind him stood two uniformed police officers, their hands resting casually on their utility belts.
Julian froze, his hand still hovering over the brass handle. Elena gasped, her hands flying to her face as all the blood drained from her already pale features.
"Julian Vance?" the man in the trench coat asked, his voice deep, gravelly, and carrying an undeniable authority that commanded the entire room.
"Yes," Julian answered cautiously, stepping away from the doorway and shielding Elena from view. "Who are you? This is a private event."
The man flashed a metallic detective badge before sliding it back into his coat pocket. "Detective Miller, City PD. I'm afraid this event is officially concluded, Mr. Vance. We received an anonymous tip regarding a fraudulent adoption ring operating through St. Jude Family Services, tied directly to a falsified birth certificate issued under the name Elena Vance—or rather, Elena Hayes."
Noah pushed off the staircase railing, walking forward with a measured, deliberate stride. "Detective, I'm Noah Sinclair. I'm the biological father of the child listed in those documents."
Detective Miller turned his sharp gaze toward Noah, nodding slowly. "We have your statement, Mr. Sinclair, and the digital ledger you managed to extract from the agency’s server this morning. It matches our ongoing investigation." The detective then shifted his cold, piercing eyes directly onto Elena, who was now trembling so violently she had to hold onto a wooden pew for support.
"Elena Hayes," Detective Miller said, pulling a folded set of documents from his leather portfolio. "You are being detained for questioning regarding mail fraud, identity falsification, and the illegal sale of a minor. I advise you anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
The silence in the grand ballroom became absolute. The faint sound of the string quartet playing in the distant garden felt like a cruel mockery of the nightmare unfolding indoors.
Elena looked frantically around the room, her eyes landing on Julian, who simply stood there, staring at her with a look of complete detachment.
"Julian," she whimpered, taking a faltering step toward him as the officers advanced. "Tell them it's a mistake. Tell them you'll protect me."

Detective Miller stepped between them, and one of the officers gently but firmly gripped Elena’s wrists, sliding a pair of cold steel handcuffs over the delicate white lace of her wedding dress.
