Chapter 4 - The Deed and the Cradle

The accusation hung in the air, sharp and suffocating, piercing the fragile remains of the wedding ceremony. Julian stopped dead in his tracks, halfway to the staircase. He slowly turned his head to look back at Elena, his expression shifting from blind rage to a terrifying, hollow incomprehension.

"What is he talking about, Elena?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that seemed to echo from the very floorboards. "What house? What child?"

Elena pressed her back against the wooden pew, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The lace of her dress caught on a splinter, but she didn't feel it. The carefully constructed life she had built over the past two years was fracturing into dust right before her eyes.

"It's not what you think, Julian," Elena pleaded, tears spilling over her eyelashes and cutting clean paths through her makeup. "Noah is lying. He's trying to destroy us because he couldn't accept that we ended years ago."

"Lying?" Noah interjected, finally reaching the bottom of the stairs. He didn't look at Elena; instead, he stepped closer to Julian, closing the distance between them with unsettling confidence. Noah reached into his inner suit pocket, slow and deliberate, making sure Julian could see every movement to avoid triggering a physical confrontation.

Julian’s muscles remained coiled like steel springs, ready to strike, but his eyes were glued to Noah’s hand.

Noah pulled out a thick, cream-colored envelope, its edges slightly yellowed with age, and held it out. Across the front, written in elegant cursive, was Elena’s name. But it was the return address in the corner that made Julian’s breath catch—a private adoption agency downtown, dated just three months prior.

"Ask her about the nursery we painted together, Julian," Noah said quietly, his voice devoid of triumph, carrying only a heavy, crushing sorrow. "Ask her why she signed away parental rights to a baby girl she claimed was miscarried."

Julian slowly reached out, his fingers trembling as he took the envelope from Noah’s hand, his eyes never leaving Elena's terrified face as he pulled out the folded legal documents inside.
