Chapter 14 - The Final Contingency

Judge Richard Vance pulled a small, silver-plated remote control from his pocket and pressed a single button. A heavy, steel security shutter slammed down over the nursery window with a deafening crash, plunging the room into artificial shadow as the backup generator kicked in.

"You're insane," Julian hissed, stepping between his uncle and Noah, who was cradling the infant protectively near the corner of the crib. "You can't trap us here. The authorities already have the server backups from the third-floor loft."

"Backups that were encrypted with a proprietary protocol that only my legal team holds the keys to," Richard replied, his voice chillingly calm as he tapped his cane against the floor. "By morning, a federal injunction will classify this entire matter as a classified state security investigation, sealing the records indefinitely. Elena will take the fall for the minor infractions, the agency will quietly restructure under a new name, and life will go on."

Noah shifted the baby carefully, his eyes locking onto the door behind the judge. "You underestimate how many people already know, Judge. Lily has the phone. The detective has the initial statements. And we are walking out of this house right now."

Richard smiled condescendingly, raising his cane slightly. "Try it, Mr. Sinclair. The front gates are electrified, the local police force answers to my pension fund, and you are standing in the middle of a private estate with a stolen infant."

Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, tackling his uncle before the old man could press another button on the remote. Richard went down hard against the lavender rug, the cane clattering across the floorboards. The remote flew from his hand, sliding beneath the heavy oak dresser on the other side of the room.

"Noah, go!" Julian shouted, pinning his uncle to the floor with a knee pressed firmly against the old man's chest. "Take your daughter and get out through the back service stairs! Go!"

Noah hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking at Julian with a mixture of respect and urgency. Then, clutching the baby tightly against his chest, he turned and sprinted out of the nursery into the dark hallway, following the layout of the old house toward the rear exit.

Richard struggled beneath Julian’s grip, his aristocratic composure finally cracking into pure, unfiltered rage. "You arrogant fool," Richard spat, glaring up at his nephew. "You’ve destroyed generations of Vance legacy for a stranger's child."

"No, Richard," Julian said, his voice steady as he held his uncle down, waiting for the distant wail of approaching sirens to finally pierce the stormy night. "I'm finally fixing it."
