Chapter 2 - The Echoes Above

The silence that followed Julian’s reading of the text message felt heavier than the grand crystal chandelier hanging overhead. Elena’s hand flew to her mouth, her long lace sleeves rustling violently as she tried to suppress a gasp that threatened to tear her chest apart. She took a staggering step backward, her white heels crunching against the scattered rose petals that lined the aisle.

"Julian, please," Elena choked out, her voice cracking with a desperation that clawed at the edges of the room. "You can't believe what that screen says. It's a sick joke. Someone is trying to sabotage us."

Julian didn't turn around. He remained kneeling on the red carpet, still clutching the black smartphone as if it were the only solid object left in a collapsing world. His dark hair fell slightly across his forehead, shadowing eyes that had suddenly gone cold and distant. He slowly swiped the screen, unlocking the chat history with a passcode he apparently didn't need, or perhaps instinctively knew.

"Upstairs?" Julian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet, devoid of the warmth that had drawn Elena to him three years ago. "The bridal suite is upstairs, Elena. The room where you supposedly spent the last three hours getting ready alone. Who is upstairs?"

Lily sniffled loudly, wiping her nose on her sleeve, looking bewildered by the sudden fury radiating from the groom. The little flower girl scrambled away from Julian, her black patent leather shoes tapping rapidly against the floorboards as she sought refuge behind a massive floral arrangement.

"I didn't mean to look," Lily whispered defensively, hugging her small knees. "It just lit up. The man said his name was Noah."

The name dropped into the space between Julian and Elena like a lead weight. Julian slowly stood up, towering over the bride in his impeccably tailored tuxedo. The bowtie that had looked so elegant now resembled a tightening noose. He looked at Elena not with anger, but with a profound, crushing disappointment that made her knees buckle.

"Noah," Julian murmured, tasting the syllable as if it were poison. "Your ex-fiancé Noah. The man who supposedly vanished from the city six months ago, right before you and I got engaged."

Elena opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Her eyes darted toward the sweeping staircase at the back of the foyer, where the shadows seemed to stretch and shift.

Footsteps echoed softly from the landing above, descending toward them.
