Chapter 11 - The Broadcasted Truth

Julian stared at the glowing laptop screen, his finger hovering over the mousepad as the chat window refreshed automatically. A new notification flashed in red text: File transfer complete. 48 items sent to City Herald.

"What is that?" Noah asked, stepping away from the open window and walking over to the desk. He leaned in, his eyes scanning the thumbnails of the files being uploaded. They weren't just adoption papers or text messages; they were high-resolution photographs, financial spreadsheets, and recorded phone calls between Elena, Clara Vance, and an unknown third party whose identity had been meticulously scrubbed from the metadata.

"Someone isn't just trying to expose Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "They're blowing the entire adoption syndicate wide open. Every corrupt judge, every falsified document, every payoff—it’s all being sent to the press right now."

Noah cursed under his breath, running a hand through his dark hair. "If the media gets hold of this before the police finish their sweep, my daughter’s name, her identity, everything will be splashed across every news outlet in the state. She’ll be a tabloid headline before she even learns how to walk."

"We need to stop the transmission," Julian said, reaching for the laptop to slam the screen shut.

Before his fingers could touch the plastic casing, a small red indicator light on the external hard drive plugged into the USB port began flashing erratically. A system prompt popped up across the center of the screen: Self-destruct sequence initiated. Data mirrored to cloud storage.

Julian froze. "It's too late. It’s already out of our hands."

Noah slammed his fist against the wooden desk, the impact rattling the stack of birth certificates. "Who did this, Julian? Who has been pulling the strings from the shadows this entire time? This wasn't just a disgruntled ex-fiancé or a bitter relative. This was planned down to the exact second."

Julian didn't answer immediately. He looked back down at the desktop, noticing a single physical object sitting right beside the keyboard—a silver signet ring resting on a velvet cloth. It was a heavy, old-fashioned ring bearing a distinctive family crest—the crest of the Vance family.

Julian’s blood ran cold. He recognized that ring instantly. It belonged to his uncle, Richard Vance, a federal magistrate who had supposedly retired to a private estate in upstate New York three years ago.

"My uncle," Julian breathed, the horror dawning on him like a physical weight. "Richard wasn't just a judge. He was the architect of the entire operation."

Noah’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Then he’s the one who took my daughter. Where is he?"
