Chapter 9

The blinding fluorescent overhead lights hummed to life, washing the Starlight Ballroom in a harsh, clinical brightness that exposed every shred of the evening’s devastation. Standing in the open doorway of the service stairwell was not a federal agent, nor a hotel security guard. It was Marcus’s older brother, David, who casually tossed Julian’s heavy steel briefcase onto a banquet table with a dull, heavy thud. He held a sleek, suppressed pistol down at his side, his tailored grey suit completely unwrinkled despite the chaos.

Marcus froze, the flashlight slipping from his hand and clattering onto the hardwood floor. He stared at his own flesh and blood, his face contorting in sheer disbelief.

"David? What the hell are you doing here? Put that gun down!" Marcus yelled, taking a protective step backward and pulling Clara behind him.

David didn't look at Marcus. His cold, calculating eyes were fixed entirely on Arthur Vance, who was still clutching his chest against the doorframe, gasping for air.

"Drop the act, Arthur," David said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless, chilling authority. "You knew my father twenty years ago. You crushed his real estate firm just like you crushed Julian’s family. You just forgot that some people play a very, very long game."

Clara stared at David, her mind spinning so fast she felt physically nauseated. "David... you were Julian’s best man. You helped him plan the wedding. You were at our house every weekend."

"I was managing the portfolio, Clara," David corrected her with a faint, mocking smile. "Julian was a useful idiot—a desperate, broke kid I found drowning in gambling debts five years ago. I gave him the fake identity, I funded his courtship with you, and I set up the offshore accounts. Julian thought he was executing his own revenge fantasy, but he was just my puppet from day one."

Arthur Vance slid down the doorframe until he was sitting on the floor, his face pale as paper. "You... you're the silent partner who bought up our corporate debt three months ago."

"Bingo, old man," David said, stepping further into the ballroom and raising the pistol slightly, pointing it not at Arthur, but directly at his own brother, Marcus.

Marcus choked out a strangled breath, his eyes locking onto the barrel of the gun. "David... are you out of your mind? I'm your brother!"

"You were always the soft one, Marcus," David replied coldly, his expression hardening like stone. "Always taking the moral high ground while our family lost everything. Now, sit down on the floor with Clara and her dear old dad, and let's wait for the federal marshals to arrive so I can hand them my scapegoat."

Clara’s hand instinctively brushed against the chair beside her, her fingers grazing the heavy envelope tied with the red ribbon that little Lily had left behind. Without making a sound, she slipped her fingers underneath the flap, praying for a miracle.
