Chapter 12

The Starlight Ballroom was instantly bathed in the dizzying, flashing strobe lights of the arriving police cruisers, casting long, frantic blue and red shadows across the ruined wedding reception. Before David could recover from Arthur’s devastating blow to his shins, heavy tactical boots swarmed the room. Four armed police officers rushed forward, their weapons drawn, pinning David face-down onto the hardwood floor with a sharp, heavy thud.

"Don't move! Hands behind your back right now!" the lead officer barked, pressing a heavy knee into David’s shoulder blade as the cold steel of handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

David let out a muffled curse, his tailored grey suit jacket tearing as he was hauled roughly to his feet. As they dragged him past the head table, he glared at Clara with eyes full of pure venom. "You think this is over? The contracts are legally binding! Even with my confession, the corporate debt will crush your family within forty-eight hours!"

"Shut him up and get him out of my sight," Arthur Vance rasped, leaning heavily against Marcus as he struggled to stand upright.

Marcus helped support the older man, casting a sympathetic, heartbroken glance toward Clara, who was still kneeling behind the remains of the wedding cake table, clutching her phone tightly in both hands. The blue glow of the screen illuminated her pale, tear-streaked face.

"Clara," Marcus said gently, taking a slow step toward her. "Are you alright? It's over. David is going to prison, and the federal marshals have the rest of Julian’s assets."

Clara slowly climbed to her feet, ignoring the ruined hem of her expensive white lace dress as it trailed across the sticky floor. She looked around the decimated ballroom—the empty tables, the shattered champagne flutes, the silent projection screen, and the lingering scent of fear and betrayal. Nothing about her life would ever be the same.

"It's not over, Marcus," Clara said quietly, her voice devoid of emotion. "Julian is still sitting in the back of a federal cruiser. And little Lily is gone."

Marcus frowned, glancing toward the service exit. "The child disappeared into the stairwell ten minutes ago. No one knows where she went."

Clara shook her head, walking slowly out from behind the table. She picked up the heavy envelope tied with the red ribbon that Lily had left behind, sliding it carefully into her handbag.

"She didn't disappear, Marcus," Clara said, walking toward the grand double doors of the ballroom. "She left us a map."

Before Marcus could ask what she meant, a sharp, urgent voice echoed from the hallway outside. It was the lead federal marshal, holding a secure tablet computer in her hand, her face grim as she stared straight at Clara.

"Mrs. Vance—Clara," the marshal called out, her voice cutting through the noise of the police radios. "You need to see this immediately. A second safety deposit box just cleared at the downtown federal reserve bank. And it’s not registered in Julian’s name, or David’s."
