Chapter 5

Arthur Vance stepped past Julian, his eyes locked entirely on the small leather notebook in Lily’s hands. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking older, frail, and violently shaken. He reached out with a trembling hand, his fingers hovering over the edge of the book as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike.

"Where did you get that book, child?" Arthur asked, his voice cracking in a way none of the corporate board members had ever heard in thirty years of business.

"It was Grandma’s," Lily replied simply, holding the book just out of Arthur’s reach. "She kept it in the attic of the old house on Maple Street until the bank took it away last month. She wrote down every date, every signature, and every time you came to visit before you changed your name."

Clara pushed herself up from the floor, leaning heavily against the banquet table for support. Her face was pale, her makeup streaked with tears, but her eyes were fixed on her father with a terrifying intensity.

"Dad," Clara said, her voice sharp and cold. "What is she talking about? What house on Maple Street?"

Arthur didn't answer her. He kept his gaze locked on Julian, who had retreated a few steps back toward the towering wedding cake. The terrifying truth was hanging in the air between them, suffocating every person in the room.

"It was never about the real estate firm, was it, Julian?" Arthur whispered, the realization dawning on him with sickening clarity. "You didn't just stumble into my company by accident. You tracked me down."

Julian let out a bitter, exhausted laugh that sounded more like a dry cough. "Do you really think a brilliant corporate titan like Arthur Vance just happened to hire a penniless kid from the wrong side of the tracks? You ruined my grandfather, Arthur. You stripped him of his shares in Vance Industries thirty years ago and drove him to an early grave. I just came back to take back what belonged to my family by birthright."

"And Clara?" Arthur shouted, stepping toward Julian with his fists clenched. "Was my daughter just collateral damage in your little revenge fantasy?"

"At first, yes," Julian admitted, his voice dropping to a flat, emotionless tone that sent a chill down everyone's spine. "I planned to marry her, take control of the board, and strip you of everything. But then... I actually fell in love with her. I swear to God, Clara, I tried to stop the plan six months ago."

Clara stared at the man she had called her soulmate for three years, feeling as though she were looking at a total stranger. The man who had held her hand through her mother's illness, the man who had laughed with her under the stars on a beach in Santorini—he was a ghost, a carefully constructed lie designed to destroy her family.

"You didn't stop anything," Lily interrupted, stepping closer to Julian and holding up the microphone. "You just forgot to check who owned the deed to this exact ballroom building."

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer horror as he realized what the child was about to reveal. Before he could lunge forward to grab the microphone, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom burst wide open, and three armed federal marshals stepped into the room.
