Chapter 2

The sudden pitch blackness of the Starlight Ballroom was pierced only by the harsh, luminescent glow of the projection screen, which continued to cycle through a series of intimate photographs. In the flickering light, Julian stood frozen, his chest heaving as he stared blindly into the darkness where Lily had just been standing. Panic rippled through the crowd of wedding guests, chairs scraping frantically against the floor as people scrambled toward the exit doors. Clara pressed her back against the towering wedding cake table, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
"Julian, turn the lights on! Where did that girl go?" Clara demanded, her voice shaking violently in the shadows. "Who is she? Who is that woman on the screen? Talk to me!"
Before Julian could answer, the emergency red exit lights flooded the room with an eerie, theatrical hue. Lily was no longer standing by the head table. Instead, she was sitting calmly at an empty table near the back exit, her small legs swinging rhythmically, the silver microphone resting flat on the white tablecloth next to a half-empty glass of sparkling cider.
Julian ignored Clara entirely, pushing his way through the bewildered crowd of family members and groomsmen who were now staring at him with expressions of profound betrayal and disgust. His best man, Marcus, reached out to grab his shoulder, but Julian shrugged him off with a violent jerk.
"Stay out of this, Marcus," Julian hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw fury and unmitigated dread.
"Stay out of this? Julian, there's a child out there claiming you abandoned her, and your bride is having a panic attack on the floor!" Marcus yelled back, his face red with righteous anger. "What the hell is going on? Did you have a family before you met Clara? Because if you did, you just committed bigamy and fraud!"
Clara heard those words, and the sound of her breath hitching cut through the ambient noise of the restless crowd. She slid down the side of the table until she was sitting on the floor, her expensive lace gown ruined by spilled champagne and dust. She looked at the giant screen, where the woman's face had now been replaced by a scanned copy of a birth certificate bearing Julian’s exact signature.
"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the whispering crowd, yet it carried a devastating weight. "Is that real? Did you sign that?"
Julian stopped dead in his tracks midway across the ballroom floor. He turned around slowly, the overhead emergency strobes catching the cold sweat beading on his forehead. He looked at Clara, then at the birth certificate, and finally at little Lily, who was now holding up a small, worn-out leather notebook.

"It's not what you think," Julian said, his voice cracking desperately.
"Then tell us what it is," a cold voice echoed from the doorway. It was Clara’s father, stepping into the hall with security guards trailing close behind him.
