Chapter 1

The chandeliers of the grand Starlight Ballroom cast a warm, golden glow over the crowded dining tables, illuminating the absolute ruin of what was supposed to be the happiest night of Julian and Clara’s lives. Ten-year-old Lily stood frozen near the head table, her bright yellow cardigan stark against the sea of black tuxedos and pastel gowns. In her small hand, she clutched a heavy silver microphone that hummed with a low, agonizing feedback loop. Behind the newlywed couple, the massive projector screen flickered, casting a giant, crisp photograph of an unfamiliar woman with haunting, dark eyes.
Clara’s hands flew up in frantic, trembling gestures, her strapless white lace wedding dress feeling suddenly suffocated around her chest.
"I didn't know about it!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks. "Julian, look at me! I swear to God, I had no idea who that woman is, or why this child is here!"
Julian didn’t move. He sat rigidly in his chair, his black tuxedo choking his throat, his face completely drained of color. His eyes were locked on the image of the woman on the screen, wide with a terror so profound it aged him ten years in a single second. The murmurs of two hundred guests died away instantly, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence that pressed against their eardrums.
"You're lying, Clara," Julian finally whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of every ounce of warmth or affection they had shared over three years of courtship. "You planned every detail of this venue. You hired this catering staff. Don't sit there and play innocent when my past just walked through the front doors in the hands of a little girl."
"Daddy?" Lily’s small, clear voice cut through the tension like a razor blade. She didn't look at Clara; she kept her heavy, unblinking gaze fixed directly on Julian. "You promised Mommy you’d come back after you bought the milk. But you never came back. And then you bought a big fancy house with this new lady."
Julian stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the polished hardwood floor, the loud bang echoing through the paralyzed ballroom.

"Quiet, Lily! Shut your mouth right now!" Julian shouted, lunging forward with a desperate look in his eyes, but a dozen guests stood up to block his path.
Clara backed away from him, her gaze shifting from the terrifying photograph on the screen to the trembling child holding the microphone. The foundation of her entire life was crumbling into dust, and as Lily slowly raised her small hand to press play on a second audio recording, the ballroom lights suddenly died completely.
