Chapter 6

The heavy oak doors hit the interior walls with a deafening crash, drawing every panicked eye toward the entrance. Three federal marshals in dark tactical vests and crisp uniforms strode into the Starlight Ballroom with practiced precision. Their boots echoed sharply against the polished wood as they bypassed the stunned wedding guests and formed a rigid perimeter around the head table. The lead marshal, a tall woman with silver-streaked hair and an expression carved from granite, pulled a folded document from her tactical pocket.

"Julian Vance, also known as Julian Hayes, also known as Julian Miller," the marshal announced loudly, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room. "You are hereby placed under arrest for federal mail fraud, identity theft, and the illegal concealment of corporate assets valued in excess of ten million dollars."

The word federal hung in the air like a physical blow. Clara stumbled backward, her hand brushing against the tiered wedding cake, sending a cascade of white sugar pearls clattering to the floor.

Julian didn't run. He didn't protest. He simply stood there with his hands at his sides, his shoulders completely caved in as the silver-haired marshal stepped forward and gripped his wrist, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, metallic click.

"You're a bit late, Agent Miller," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of fear, replaced by a hollow, haunting exhaustion. "The damage is already done. The contracts are signed."

"The contracts are null and void under Section Four of the Federal Asset Recovery Act," the marshal replied coldly, pulling Julian’s arms behind his back. "Every single cent you embezzled from Arthur Vance’s subsidiary accounts over the past four years has been frozen as of twenty minutes ago. Including the deed to this hotel."

Arthur Vance stared at the federal agent, his mouth slightly open. "Wait—what do you mean this hotel? This building belongs to my holding corporation."

"Not anymore, Mr. Vance," the marshal said, nodding toward little Lily, who was now carefully packing the silver microphone back into a small velvet pouch. "The legal primary beneficiary of the Vance family trust was never Arthur, and it was never Clara. It was Julian’s late wife—and by right of blood, her surviving legal heir."

Clara’s knees buckled beneath her, and she would have hit the floor for a second time if Marcus, the best man, hadn't rushed forward to catch her by the elbows.

"Julian..." Clara whispered, tears blurring her vision as she looked at the man she had loved, now standing in handcuffs between two armed officers. "Is that why you married me? Because my father's signature was the only thing standing between you and the trust fund?"

Julian stopped as the marshals began leading him toward the exit. He turned his head slowly, looking back at Clara with an expression of such profound, unadulterated agony that it clawed at her heart despite everything.

"I wanted the fortune, Clara. God knows I did," Julian said, his voice cracking painfully. "But I never wanted to hurt you. Everything I told you about how I felt... that part wasn't a lie."

"Get him out of my sight," Arthur barked, his voice shaking with a rage so deep he could barely form the words. "Take him out of my hotel before I forget I'm a civilized man."

As the marshals dragged Julian through the heavy oak doors, the massive projection screen behind the head table flickered one last time, shifting from the birth certificate to a live video feed from the hotel's underground parking garage.

On the screen, a second group of federal agents were surrounding a black luxury sedan belonging to Julian, pulling a heavy steel briefcase out of the trunk and opening it to reveal stacks of cash and a second set of identity papers bearing Clara’s own name.
