Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

The polished brass doorknob rotated slowly, emitting a heavy, metallic click that echoed loudly in the unnatural silence of the hallway. Elena scrambled backward on the beige rug, her fingers scraping against the floorboards as she pulled herself away from the door.

Mark remained on his knees, his breathing ragged and shallow. He stared at the moving handle with the expression of a man witnessing his own execution.

The door did not swing open; it dissolved inward, fading into a shimmering haze of blue light that smelled faintly of ozone and old dust. Beyond the threshold lay no suburban street, no maple tree, and no morning sunlight. There was only an endless expanse of shifting, geometric shadows stretching across an abyss of absolute nothingness.

A figure stepped out of the haze.

It wore a dark, tailored suit that seemed to absorb the light around it, casting no reflection on the polished wooden floor. The face beneath the brim of a classic fedora was entirely smooth, devoid of eyes, nose, or mouth—a blank expanse of pale skin that shifted like liquid mercury.

Leo slid off the gray storage bench, his red hair bouncing slightly as his small feet touched the hardwood floor. He did not look like a toddler learning to walk; he moved with fluid, terrifying grace, stepping past his frozen mother and kneeling father as if they were nothing more than discarded furniture.

"You are early," Leo said, looking up at the faceless entity standing in their hallway.

The entity did not speak aloud, but a deep, vibrating resonance echoed inside the minds of both Elena and Mark, a voice that felt like grinding stones.

The contract is fulfilled. The child has anchored the threshold.

Elena’s hands flew to her head as the mental voice scraped against her thoughts like sandpaper. She screamed, but her voice was swallowed entirely by the entity’s presence. "Get away from him! Leave my son alone!"

Mark lunged forward, throwing his weight against the polished floor to shield Leo, but the faceless man raised a single, pale hand. An invisible wave of kinetic energy slammed into Mark’s chest, sending him skidding backward until he crashed violently against the hallway wall, knocking a framed family portrait askew.

"Mark!" Elena cried, crawling toward her husband.

May you like

Leo turned his head slowly, his blue eyes locking onto Elena with a chilling emptiness. "Mommy, don't fight it. The math doesn't work out any other way. Daddy signed the papers."
