Chapter 14 - The Final Firewall

The faceless entities surged forward, their pale, liquid-mercury hands reaching out to intercept Mark as he lunged toward the core server.
Elena didn't hesitate. With a fierce battle cry, she sprinted past Mark, swinging the heavy iron poker with every ounce of strength in her body. The metal struck the lead entity square in its smooth, featureless head with a resonant clang like a church bell.
The entity staggered backward, its form glitching into a cascade of broken digital code before dissolving into the void.
Interference detected, the mental chorus echoed angrily in their minds, vibrating the air with deafening intensity.
The remaining two entities turned their attention away from Mark, their pale hands extending toward Elena as they closed in on her from both sides.
"Mommy!" Leo cried out from where he sat on the metal grating.
The toddler raised both of his small hands, his red hair sparking with intense blue static electricity. A blinding shockwave of pure energy erupted from Leo’s palms, slamming into the two entities and sending them flying backward off the edge of the suspended platform into the endless dark abyss.
Mark seized the moment. He lunged past the falling shadows, throwing his weight against the obsidian terminal console. His hands flew across the glass interface, typing the master override sequence he had memorized the night he signed the fatal contract.
Error: Administrator Override Requires Bloodline Verification.
"Mark, use the watch!" Elena yelled, defending the perimeter as more geometric shadows began to crawl up from the edges of the platform.
Mark pulled the silver pocket watch from his cardigan pocket, slamming it directly against the biometric scanner of the obsidian terminal. The sharp glass edge of the watch sliced deep into his palm, spraying crimson blood across the digital pad.
The terminal flashed a brilliant, blinding white light.
Bloodline Verified. Initiating System Wipe.
The colossal digital clock hovering above them stopped its countdown at 00:00:03, freezing instantly.
"It's working!" Mark yelled over the rising, deafening roar of the collapsing servers.
The obsidian terminal began to crack down the middle, glowing with an intense, blinding heat as the entire pocket dimension started to tear apart at the seams.
"We have to go back!" Elena screamed, scooping Leo into her arms and grabbing Mark by his torn green cardigan.

They ran blindly toward the glowing white rift of the service elevator just as the entire cathedral of servers imploded into a silent, brilliant flash of white light.
