Chapter 13 - The Forty-Second Floor

The elevator doors split open with a harsh, grinding screech, revealing not a corporate office floor, but a vast, cathedral-like chamber of steel and glass suspended in an impossible, starless void. Rows of towering server racks hummed with pulsing blue light, stretching endlessly into the darkness in every direction.

Elena stepped out of the elevator, holding Leo securely in her arms. The air here was freezing, and every breath formed small clouds of vapor in the artificial chill.

Mark stumbled out behind her, clutching his bruised ribs. His eyes widened as he took in the scale of the facility. "This... this isn't inside the Apex Tower. This is a pocket dimension anchored to the building's infrastructure."

"You built a bridge to nowhere, Mark," Elena said, her voice echoing in the vast chamber. "And now we have to burn the bridge."

At the center of the server racks stood a massive, obsidian terminal console. Above it, a colossal digital clock hovered in mid-air, its numbers ticking backward rapidly: 00:45:12... 00:45:11...

"Forty-five minutes," Mark whispered, horror dawning on his face. "When that clock hits zero, the tether becomes permanent. Leo will be pulled completely into their timeline, and our memories of him will be wiped from this reality."

Leo raised his head from Elena’s shoulder, his blue eyes locking onto the obsidian terminal. "The master switch is behind the core server, Daddy. You have to pull the physical fiber-optic cable."

Mark nodded, his expression hardening with a desperate, self-sacrificing resolve. He began to run toward the center of the chamber, dodging the pulsing cables that snaked across the metal grating floor.

Suddenly, the floor beneath them shuddered violently. Out of the shadows surrounding the server racks, three faceless entities stepped forward, their dark, tailored suits absorbing the blue light of the terminals. They moved with terrifying synchronicity, blocking Mark’s path to the core server.

The debt must be paid, the multi-layered chorus echoed inside their minds, shaking the foundations of the platform. The transaction is absolute.

Mark stopped dead in his tracks, looking back at Elena and Leo with agonizing regret.

Elena lowered Leo gently onto the metal grating, standing up straight and gripping the iron fire poker she had managed to smuggle all the way from the hallway.

"Go, Mark!" Elena shouted, her eyes blazing with fury. "Get to the switch!"
