Chapter 12 - Apex Tower

The sleek glass facade of the Apex Tower gleamed under the gray afternoon sky, casting towering reflections across the busy downtown plaza. Elena pulled their sedan into the underground parking garage, cutting the ignition with a sharp twist of her wrist.

Mark fumbled with his bruised ribs as he pushed open his door, stepping out onto the cold concrete. His biometric security badge hung around his neck on a faded lanyard.

"We need to take the executive service elevator," Mark said, wincing as he led the way toward a set of unmarked steel doors tucked away in the corner of the parking level. "The main lobby elevators are monitored by corporate AI. They'll lock down our credentials the moment we swipe."

Elena unbuckled Leo from his car seat, lifting the toddler into her arms. Leo rested his red head against her shoulder, his small body surprisingly warm, vibrating with a faint, low-frequency hum that only she could feel.

"Stay close to me," Elena told Mark, her eyes scanning the dim shadows of the parking garage. The air here tasted faintly of ozone, the same chemical scent that had filled their hallway that morning.

Mark swiped his badge against the digital terminal beside the service elevator. The screen flashed red, emitting a shrill warning tone.

Access Denied: Architect Authorization Revoked.

"Damn it," Mark cursed, slamming his fist against the metal wall. "They've already locked me out of the system."

"Step aside," Elena said calmly.

She walked up to the terminal, holding Leo closer to the glass screen. The toddler raised his small hand, pressing his palm flat against the digital pad.

The warning tone cut off instantly. The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green, and the steel elevator doors slid open with a soft, pneumatic chime.

Anchor Override Accepted. Welcome, Prime Subject.

Mark stared in stunned disbelief as Elena walked into the elevator car with Leo. He hurried in after them, his heart hammering against his ribs. The doors closed, sealing them inside a cramped, mirrored box that began to ascend at a breathtaking, stomach-dropping speed.

"How did you do that?" Mark breathed, looking at his son with a mixture of awe and terror.

"He's not just a subject, Mark," Elena said, her voice steady as steel. "He's the administrator now. And we're going to delete your code."

The elevator digital floor counter climbed rapidly: 30, 35, 40...

Suddenly, the car jerked violently to a halt. The emergency lights flickered on, bathing the mirrored interior in a harsh, pulsing red glow. The digital display on the wall went dark, replaced by a single line of glowing text scrolling across the metal panel.
