Chapter 15 - The Morning Sun

The warm morning sunlight sliced sharply through the frosted glass of the front door, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the quiet hallway.
Elena knelt on the woven beige rug, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders as she pulled the canvas tight around a tiny foot. Leo, her red-haired toddler, sat squirming happily on the gray storage bench, wearing his oversized brown sweatshirt and his favorite white Converse sneakers.
The air felt light, clean, and completely free of the suffocating weight that had poisoned their home just moments—or perhaps lifetimes—ago.
Mark stood framed in the doorway, his hand resting on the polished brass doorknob. His dark hair was neat, his thick beard neatly trimmed, and he wore a clean dark green cardigan over a crisp white t-shirt. He looked like a man who had finally slept peacefully for the first time in years.
Elena looked up, a warm, genuine smile gracing her lips as she adjusted the laces on Leo’s shoes.
Mark smiled back, stepping across the threshold and closing the front door firmly behind him with a soft, reassuring click.
Leo stopped squirming, pointing a small finger playfully at Mark, exactly as he had done before the world stopped.
"Stop!" the toddler giggled, his voice filled with pure, innocent joy.
Mark laughed, a rich, resonant sound, and knelt down in front of the storage bench to tickle his son's chin. "Are you going, buddy?"
Elena stood up behind them, leaning in to warmly hug and kiss the top of Leo’s red head while Mark finished tying the shoes.

"Are you going, sweetie?" Elena whispered softly into the warm, quiet air of their suburban home.
The front door remained firmly shut, the silver pocket watch lay buried and forgotten in the soil beneath the maple tree outside, and time marched forward, steady and unbroken, carrying them safely into a tomorrow they had fought across dimensions to keep.
