Chapter 10 - The Anchor Drags

Mark cried out as the shadowy hand wrenched him off his feet, dragging him violently across the hardwood floor toward the gaping maw of the basement doorway. His fingers clawed desperately at the rug, leaving deep friction burns on his palms, but the pull was relentless.
"Elena! Help me!" Mark screamed, his dark green cardigan catching on a protruding nail and ripping down the back.
Elena didn't hesitate. Abandoning the iron poker, she lunged forward, grabbing Mark’s wrists with both hands. Her muscles strained to the breaking point as she pitted her own strength against the abyssal pull of the cellar.
"I won't let you go," Elena gritted through clenched teeth, her long dark hair whipping around her face in the violent draft rushing up from the basement. "Not because I forgive you, but because you're going to fix every single line of code you wrote!"
From the living room, Leo stood up from the sofa. The static electricity around his red hair was now crackling into visible blue arcs. The toddler walked with slow, deliberate steps toward the hallway, his small blue eyes glowing with an unearthly luminance.
"The loop is closing," Leo chanted, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "The architect must pay in full."
Mark thrashed as the shadowy hand pulled him further into the threshold of the open basement door. Below lay not stairs, but a vast, swirling vortex of numbers and shifting equations written in glowing neon light across an endless void of blackness.
"The software!" Mark gasped, spitting blood as his chest hit the splintered threshold. "It's running on the main server at the firm! If you don't destroy the physical hard drives downtown, the contract renews automatically at midnight!"
Elena’s eyes widened. Midnight. They had less than twelve hours before the temporal anchor locked permanently, consuming Leo’s existence and erasing him from every memory they shared.
"Hold on to me!" Elena shouted, bracing her feet against the solid oak pillar of the staircase.
She wrapped her legs around the base of the pillar and pulled Mark with a surge of adrenaline born of sheer desperation. Inch by inch, Mark slid back out of the threshold, away from the swirling vortex of numbers.
With a final, ear-splitting screech, the shadowy hand vanished back into the basement, and the door slammed shut on its own, the bruised purple light instantly extinguishing into total darkness.
Mark collapsed onto the hallway floor, gasping for air, his body trembling violently.
Elena panted heavily, her hands shaking as she let go of the pillar. She looked down at Mark, then turned her gaze toward Leo, who stood at the end of the hallway, watching them with a heartbreakingly innocent expression.

"Get your jacket, Mark," Elena said, her voice like ice. "We're going to the office."
