Chapter 9 - The Second Arrival

The screech of burning rubber cut through the afternoon air, instantly drawing every eye toward the intersection at the end of the street. A heavily modified civilian SUV came tearing around the corner at reckless speed, its tires smoking as the driver fought to correct a violent drift. The vehicle didn't slow down; instead, it accelerated directly toward the blocked entrance of the residential driveway, ignoring the federal sedans parked dead in the center of the asphalt.

"Incoming vehicle! Breach at the twelve-o'clock vector!" the lead federal marshal shouted, instantly drawing his sidearm and dropping into a tactical stance, his weapon trained squarely on the oncoming SUV. The other three marshals unholstered their firearms in unison, their boots sliding wide to establish a firing line that cut off any possibility of escape.

Officer Miller stumbled backward, tripping over his own boots and landing hard on the manicured lawn of the suburban house, gasping for air as the terror of crossfire suddenly became an immediate, terrifying reality. "Get down! That's... that's the tactical response unit from our own precinct!" Miller yelled from the grass, his hands shielding his head. "They're not here to help us; Captain Vance sent them to wipe the field!"

The SUV slammed on its brakes, sliding sideways across the pavement with an ear-splitting squeal of metal before coming to a violent halt just ten feet away from the rear bumper of Special Agent Vance’s black sedan. The doors flew open simultaneously, and four masked men in tactical gear—wearing unmarked matte-black vests and carrying short-barreled carbines—poured out onto the street.

"Drop your weapons! Federal agents, stand down!" Special Agent Vance commanded, her voice slicing through the chaos with absolute authority as she leveled her own service pistol directly at the lead tactical operative. She didn't flinch; her stance was rock-solid, forged in years of high-threat federal operations.

The masked operatives hesitated for a fraction of a second, caught off guard by the sheer number of federal marshals holding the high ground. But the leader of the rogue squad didn't drop his rifle. Instead, he raised the barrel, sweeping it deliberately across the line of marshals toward the blue vintage Chevrolet pickup truck where Marcus was still half-submerged inside the cab.

"The vehicle is government property under seizure! Step away from the truck or we open fire!" the lead operative barked through his heavy tactical mask, his voice electronically distorted to mask his identity.

Marcus didn't panic. With a final, sharp twist of his wrist deep beneath the dashboard, he detached the titanium solid-state drive from its housing. He pulled his upper body out of the cab of the truck, holding the heavy, secure module firmly in his right hand. The blue paint of the vintage Chevrolet gleamed in the sunlight behind him like a monument to an unyielding truth.

"You're a bit too late for a seizure, operator," Marcus said calmly, his voice echoing clearly across the tense street. He raised the titanium drive so the red operational status light blinked steadily in full view of the rogue squad. "The master database has already been mirrored to federal servers in Quantico."

The lead operative lowered his carbine by a fraction of an inch, his eyes fixed on the drive with pure, unadulterated desperation. "Give me the drive, and walk away," the operative growled, his finger twitching nervously against the trigger guard. "Or nobody leaves this driveway alive."
