Chapter 12 - The Emergency Override

The harsh static of the emergency dispatch override hissed from the tactical radio on the pavement, broadcasting Captain Vance's manic final orders to the entire surrounding grid. Officer Miller, still slumped against the brick foundation of the house, felt the blood drain entirely from his face. A self-destruct protocol on the basement vault? He knew that vault intimately; it wasn't just a storage room for case files—it was the municipal server core that housed decades of digital evidence for every active and cold case in the city, including the classified files relating to Marcus’s father.

"He's going to incinerate the entire municipal record," Miller gasped, struggling to push himself up onto shaky legs. "If that server core goes up, every active prosecution, every cold case, and every piece of evidence linking the city council to the syndicate vanishes in thirty seconds."

Special Agent Vance didn't hesitate. She whipped her encrypted federal terminal from her tactical belt, her fingers flying across the touch screen with blinding speed as she interfaced directly with the Department of Justice mainframe. "Quantico, this is Agent Vance. I need an immediate remote firewall lock on the municipal precinct's sub-basement server. They're initiating a thermal purge."

A cold, synthetic automated voice chimed from the handheld terminal: “Warning. Local precinct network is operating on an isolated analog override loop. Digital firewall bypass rejected. Manual physical shutoff required at the main terminal junction box located inside the precinct basement.”

Vance cursed under her breath, slamming her fist against the side of her black sedan. "It's an analog kill switch. Digital commands won't reach it. We have to get inside that precinct before the thermal charge detonates."

Marcus stepped forward, his calm demeanor returning with absolute clarity. He looked at Officer Miller, who was now standing on wobbly legs, staring down at the empty holster on his hip.

"Miller," Marcus said sharply, his voice commanding the attention of the disgraced cop. "You know every hidden corridor, every maintenance hatch, and every blind spot in that precinct better than anyone else alive. How long before Captain Vance’s thermal charge reaches critical mass?"

Miller swallowed hard, his eyes wide with stark terror. "Twelve minutes. Maybe fifteen if the cooling fans are still running. But the front entrance is locked down tight with biometric steel shutters, and the SWAT team is already sealing the perimeter from the inside."

"Then we aren't going in through the front," Marcus said calmly, walking back to the driver's side door of the blue vintage Chevrolet pickup truck. He reached under the dashboard again, retrieved a heavy leather duffel bag hidden deep within the floorboard panels, and tossed it onto the hood with a heavy thud. He unzipped the bag, revealing an array of specialized federal override tools, encrypted descramblers, and heavy breaching charges.

"We're taking the old service tunnel running directly beneath the precinct foundations," Marcus said, looking directly into Miller’s terrified eyes. "And you're going to lead us straight to the basement vault."

Miller stared at the duffel bag, then up at Marcus’s unyielding gaze, realizing that his redemption wasn't waiting at the end of a patrol shift—it was waiting at the bottom of a burning federal rabbit hole.
