Chapter 13 - The Descent

The heavy iron maintenance hatch located behind the municipal utility shed groaned in protest as Special Agent Vance and the lead federal marshal threw their combined weight against it, rusted hinges popping with a sharp, echoing snap. Below the hatch, a steep, concrete stairwell descended into absolute darkness, exhaling a damp, cold draft that smelled of old dust, wet stone, and subterranean decay.

Officer Miller stood at the edge of the opening, his flashlight beam cutting a pale yellow swath through the murky void below. "This is the old municipal steam tunnel," Miller said, his voice echoing hollowly against the concrete walls. "It hasn't been mapped on city blueprints since nineteen eighty-five. It runs directly beneath the precinct basement vault, right past the main power grid junction."

"Good," Marcus said, stepping past the disgraced cop with the heavy leather duffel bag slung securely over one shoulder. He flicked on a high-intensity tactical headlamp, illuminating his focused, unreadable expression. "Familiar territory for a man who spent ten years patrolling the upper floors without ever wondering what was crawling beneath his boots."

Miller flinched at the subtle jab, but he didn't offer a defense. He simply stepped down onto the first concrete step, his boots clicking against the damp surface as he led the way into the abyss. Special Agent Vance followed closely behind him, her sidearm drawn and ready, scanning the dark corners of the tunnel with her tactical flashlight sweeping left and right in a rhythmic, defensive arc. Two federal marshals brought up the rear, their heavy tactical gear scraping against the narrow brick walls of the subterranean passage.

The air grew progressively warmer as they moved deeper beneath the city streets, the ambient temperature climbing steadily as they approached the precinct's sub-basement grid. A faint, low-frequency hum vibrated through the soles of their boots—the unmistakable sound of industrial cooling fans straining against an impending thermal overload.

"We're directly under the primary evidence locker now," Miller whispered, stopping in front of a heavy iron access ladder bolted vertically into the brick wall. He pointed his flashlight upward toward a rusted circular hatch sealed with a mechanical wheel valve. "That valve leads straight up into the sub-basement corridor, ten feet away from the vault door."

Marcus stepped up to the ladder, setting the heavy duffel bag down on the wet stone floor. He reached in, pulling out a specialized mechanical decryption device equipped with a magnetic clamp. "Hold your positions," Marcus instructed, his voice dropping into a quiet, tactical register. "If Captain Vance has rigged the thermal charge to the door mechanism, turning that valve could trigger a premature detonation."

Vance stepped up beside him, pressing her ear against the cold iron of the hatch. Faintly, through the solid metal, they could hear the muffled sound of frantic shouting and the rapid clicking of computer keys echoing from the room above. Captain Vance was still inside the bunker, desperately trying to salvage whatever encrypted files he could before the purge sequence completed its countdown.

"He's still in there," Vance whispered, her eyes locking onto Marcus. "The thermal countdown timer has less than five minutes left on our remote telemetry."

Marcus didn't hesitate. He attached the magnetic decryption clamp to the center of the iron wheel valve, punched a rapid sequence into his keypad, and hit enter. The device whined softly as it began brute-forcing the mechanical deadlock.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocked the tunnel from the floor above, showering the team in a cascade of fine concrete dust and blinding sparks.
