Chapter 6 - The Incoming Call

The shrill vibration of the cell phone cut through the heavy silence of the driveway like a razor blade. Officer Miller flinched as if he had been physically struck, his hand hovering over his duty belt before freezing entirely under the unblinking, predatory gaze of Special Agent Vance. The phone buzzed a second time, the screen glowing brightly against the dark blue fabric of his uniform pants, displaying a caller ID that made the veteran cop's stomach drop into an abyss.
"Answer it, Officer," Marcus said softly, leaning against the fender of the blue vintage Chevrolet pickup truck with his arms crossed over his dark t-shirt. His tone wasn't demanding; it was the chilling certainty of a man watching a trapped animal realize the cage door had locked. "Put it on speaker. Let's hear what Captain Vance has to say about his morning oversight."
Miller swallowed hard, his throat clicking audibly in the quiet afternoon air. He looked from Marcus to Special Agent Vance, whose hand rested casually near the holster of her concealed weapon. Realizing there was no escape route, no departmental shield to hide behind, and no plausible lie that could survive federal scrutiny, Miller slid his trembling thumb across the screen and hit the speakerphone icon.
"Miller! What the hell is taking so long?" Captain Vance’s voice bellowed through the phone's tiny speaker, echoing harshly off the asphalt of the driveway. The captain sounded frantic, stripped of his usual gravelly authority. "I'm looking at the live traffic feed from the municipal camera on Elm Street. The tow truck is still sitting there, and my private line to dispatch is flashing red. Did you seize the hard drive or not?"
The entire neighborhood seemed to hold its collective breath. The onlookers on the sidewalk, who had been whispering moments before, went dead silent, straining to catch every syllable leaking from the mobile device.
Officer Miller stood frozen, his eyes glued to the pavement, completely paralyzed by the trap he had walked into. He had spent ten years believing he was just a loyal soldier following the chain of command, only to realize he was an expendable pawn in a high-stakes conspiracy.
"Captain," Miller began, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "You... you didn't tell me about federal involvement. The truck belongs to..."
"I don't give a damn who you think it belongs to!" Captain Vance interrupted, his voice rising in panic and fury. "If federal agents are on site, it means the perimeter has been compromised. You need to secure that physical asset now, or we are both going away for twenty-five years on obstruction of justice charges! Did you open the steering column like I trained you to do?"
Special Agent Vance stepped forward, her expression turning into absolute stone. She didn't wait for Miller to fumble another word. With a fluid, lightning-fast motion, she reached out, plucked the cell phone directly from the officer's paralyzed grip, and brought it close to her mouth.
"Captain Vance," the federal agent said, her voice dripping with lethal calm. "This is Special Agent Rachel Vance of the Department of Justice. Your precinct's jurisdiction ended ten miles back. Consider yourself formally relieved of command, effective immediately."

A sharp, stunned gasp echoed through the phone line, followed instantly by a dial tone as the captain abruptly hung up on the other end.
