Chapter 10 - The Standoff

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the asphalt, baking the street into a shimmering furnace, but the temperature on the driveway felt absolute zero. The four federal marshals held their positions with unyielding discipline, their barrels locked dead-center on the masked operatives. Special Agent Vance kept her stance wide and balanced, her eyes tracking the twitching finger on the lead rogue's trigger guard with predatory focus. One wrong twitch, one stray micro-expression, and a firefight would erupt in the middle of a quiet suburban neighborhood.

"You really think Captain Vance is going to give you your retirement bonus after you spray a residential street with federal blood?" Marcus asked, his tone dripping with cool, analytical indifference. He didn't drop the titanium solid-state drive; instead, he rested it casually against his thigh, refusing to show a single ounce of fear. "He’s already burning the precinct logs. You're not an extraction team. You're a clean-up crew. And once the job is done, you're the loose ends he needs to tie up next."

The lead operative’s shoulders tightened perceptibly beneath his matte-black tactical vest. The electronic distortion of his voice couldn't completely hide the sudden hitch in his breathing. He glanced sideways at his flanking teammate, whose grip on his carbine had slackened just a fraction. The psychological leverage Marcus applied was precise, chipping away at the fragile loyalty binding the rogue squad to a corrupt captain who was already miles away and shredding documents.

"Don't listen to him! He's running a bluff!" one of the flanking operatives shouted, his voice cracking with panic beneath his mask as he raised his barrel higher. "The captain said the package was uncopied! If we go back empty-handed, we're all done for!"

"Lower your weapon, son," the lead federal marshal warned, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely devoid of hesitation. "You're looking at federal treason charges if you take another breath with that barrel raised. Drop the steel right now."

Officer Miller crawled backward on the manicured lawn until his back pressed firmly against the brick foundation of the house. He watched in absolute horror as the standoff reached its absolute razor-edge peak. He had spent his entire career believing in the brotherhood of the badge, and now he was watching two heavily armed factions—one upholding the law, the other shielding corruption—stand ready to tear each other to shreds over a vintage blue pickup truck.

"You have five seconds to drop your weapons and lay face-down on the asphalt," Special Agent Vance commanded, her voice dropping into a lethal register that left no room for negotiation. "Five. Four. Three..."

The lead rogue operative’s finger tightened white against the trigger guard. His eyes darted from Vance to Marcus, then to the heavy black sedan blocking the exit behind them. He was calculating angles, measuring odds, and realizing that escape was mathematically impossible.

Before Vance could reach the count of one, the lead operative’s carbine suddenly slipped from his trembling grasp, clattering loudly against the sun-baked concrete.
