Chapter 9

The utility shaft deposited them into a damp, sub-level chamber that felt entirely disconnected from the sterile efficiency of the training hangar above. The air here was heavy with the smell of stagnant water, ozone, and old iron. Overhead, thick bundles of fiber-optic cables and galvanized water pipes ran like the veins of a mechanical beast, disappearing into the dark recesses of the foundation walls.
Marcus clicked on a compact tactical flashlight he had retrieved from his utility pocket, sweeping the narrow beam across the concrete floor. The light caught the faded, yellowed stencil of a decommissioned military project logo stamped onto a rusted steel bulkhead door at the far end of the chamber.
"This section isn't on the current facility blueprints," Marcus said, tracing the peeling paint with the edge of his beam. "According to the logs we saw upstairs, this entire wing was sealed off after the restructuring program five years ago."
"Which means it's the only place in the facility that isn't tied into the active surveillance network," Elena replied, stepping forward and testing the heavy iron wheel handle of the bulkhead door. With a sharp groan of protesting metal and rusted hinges, the wheel turned three full rotations, breaking the pneumatic seal that had kept the compartment airtight for years.
A rush of cold, stale air escaped the chamber, carrying the scent of dust and preserved paper.
They stepped inside, sweeping their flashlights across the space. The room was surprisingly large, fitted with rows of offline mainframe towers, their metal casings covered in a thick layer of undisturbed grey dust. In the center of the room sat a single steel desk, upon which rested an older generation military terminal, completely independent of the modern fiber-optic network upstairs.

"This is an air-gapped terminal," Marcus realized, walking over to the desk and examining the heavy-duty power supply unit. "It doesn't connect to the internet, and it doesn't report to Grant's command console. Whatever data is stored on these hard drives predates the current administration entirely."
Elena stepped up beside him, pulling the silver USB drive from her pocket. "Let's see what Grant was trying to keep buried beneath our feet."
