Chapter 13: The Choice of a Lifetime

The silence in the sub-level chamber stretched out for an eternity. The blinking blue light of the USB drive in Marcus’s pocket had finally gone dark as the battery drained completely. He looked down at his hands, encased in the worn leather grappling gloves, then across at Elena. The entire trajectory of their lives—the hidden scars, the manufactured memories, the stolen years of their past—was compressed into the small piece of metal resting in his palm.
If he handed the drive to Grant, they would survive, but they would remain prisoners of a system that viewed them as disposable assets. If he refused, the containment strike Grant spoke of would turn the entire facility into a smoking crater before dawn.
"There's a third option," Elena spoke up, her voice cutting through the heavy air with absolute clarity. She didn't look at Grant; her eyes were fixed entirely on Marcus. "We don't hand over the drive to the warden, and we don't let the committee bury the truth."
Grant sighed, shaking his head slowly. "There is no third option, Elena. The world outside doesn't care about Project Chimera. They only care about plausible deniability."
"Then we force them to care," Marcus said, a slow, grim determination replacing the cautious doubt in his eyes.

Before Grant could raise his sidearm, Marcus dropped his weight and executed a sharp, explosive leg sweep against the concrete floor, kicking up a blinding cloud of decades-old dust and rust flakes directly into the faces of the security operatives. Simultaneously, Elena pivoted, striking the tactical flashlight from Grant’s hand with a swift, calculated downward chop of her forearm.
The sub-level chamber plunged into absolute, chaotic darkness, punctuated instantly by the sharp, thunderous roar of a suppressed carbine discharging into the ceiling.
