Chapter 1

The cool air of the hangar-turned-gym smelled of vulcanized rubber, stale sweat, and the sharp bite of floor wax. Beneath the harsh fluorescent strip lights, the blue training mats stretched out like an artificial ocean, marked precisely in the center by a stark white cross of athletic tape. Standing atop that cross was Marcus, his chest rising and falling in a steady, controlled rhythm. At thirty years old, his dark hair was cropped close, his black t-shirt clung to a muscular frame, and his black sweatpants pooled slightly over his bare feet. On his hands, the leather UFC grappling gloves were scuffed from years of hard use. He offered a confident, easy smile, tilting his head toward Elena, who stood just feet away.
Elena remained statuesque, her long dark hair pulled back into a tight, practical ponytail. She wore a matching black t-shirt, black leggings, and her own pair of grappling gloves. Her face bore no trace of amusement; her expression was stark, serious, and utterly focused. Around the perimeter of the mats, a half-dozen soldiers stood in silence, watching the sparring setup with acute interest. A few steps back, Master Sergeant Grant held a metal clipboard against his chest, his eyes narrowed behind wire-rimmed glasses, silently observing the impending clash of styles and egos.
Marcus shifted his weight, letting the foam beneath his feet compress slightly. He broke the heavy silence with a light, teasing tone, letting his voice carry across the open space. "Get off the mat before you embarrass yourself," he said, keeping his eyes locked onto hers, daring her to flinch under the weight of his bravado.
Elena didn't blink. She reached down with her left hand, adjusting the Velcro strap of her right grappling glove with deliberate slowness. The mechanical rasp of the fastener cut through the hum of the overhead ventilation system. When she raised her gaze, her eyes were cold and steady. "I'll go easy on you," she replied, her voice smooth, low, and entirely devoid of hesitation.
Grant flipped a page on his clipboard, his pen poised to write. Marcus took a cautious step forward, his smile fading just a fraction as he measured the distance between them. "Grant, you sure?" Marcus asked, glancing sideways toward the instructor for a split second of hesitation.
Elena did not look away, nor did she blink. "I know," she whispered.
In a fraction of a second, the sparring drill shattered into explosive reality. Marcus lunged forward with a textbook double-leg takedown attempt, but Elena dropped her center of gravity with terrifying speed. She pivoted on her heel, hooked her forearm behind his knee, and used his own momentum against him. With a sharp twist of her hips, she sent him crashing hard onto the blue mat. Marcus slid backward a full six feet, his shoulder blades scraping the foam as the breath rushed out of his lungs in a sharp gasp.

Marcus sat stunned on the blue mat, staring up at the ceiling lights. Elena stood directly over him, her stance balanced, her breathing even. "What just happened?" Marcus muttered, shaking his head to clear the sudden disorientation. "That isn't a command position."
Elena stared down at him, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper that only he could hear. "You knew her. I recognized her before the bell." Marcus froze, the color draining from his confident face as the true meaning of the match settled over the room.
