Chapter 10

Marcus slid the silver USB drive into the ancient serial port of the offline terminal. The machine whined audibly, its internal cooling fans struggling to spin after years of dormancy. A flickering amber monitor sprang to life, casting a harsh, sickly glow across their faces as lines of archaic command-line interface text scrolled upward in a stuttering cascade.

"The file structure is encrypted using a legacy military protocol," Marcus muttered, his fingers flying across the clunky mechanical keyboard as he entered a sequence of decryption keys derived from their old personnel files. "If this doesn't work, the system will trigger an automatic data wipe and fry the motherboard."

Elena watched the progress bar crawl slowly across the bottom of the amber screen. The tension in the room was palpable; every tick of the system clock felt like a countdown to discovery or disaster.

With a soft electronic chime, the directory finally unlocked.

A single master file appeared on the screen, labeled: PROJECT CHIMERA: TERMINATION AUDIT.

Marcus clicked on the file, and a series of detailed operational logs, medical reports, and internal memos began to populate the display. As they read through the text, the true nature of their presence at the training facility snapped into sharp, terrifying focus. They weren't being trained for a new deployment; they were being evaluated as the final surviving subjects of an illegal behavioral modification program that had been officially decommissioned a decade ago.

"Look at the dates," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she pointed to a series of deployment logs. "Every operative who went through the Blackwater rotation with us... they didn't retire, and they didn't die in action. They were systematically recalled, re-evaluated, and scrubbed."

"And we were brought here because our neural conditioning is finally stabilizing," Marcus added, his jaw tightening as he scrolled down to his own medical file, which detailed every psychological trigger, combat reflex, and memory suppression technique that had been implanted in his brain. "Grant isn't an instructor. He's the warden of a human archive."

The realization hung heavy in the damp air. They weren't soldiers following orders; they were loose ends in a high-level military conspiracy that was preparing to permanently close the books on its darkest chapter.
