Chapter 8

The beam of the flashlight swept across the doorframe, illuminating the dust motes hanging thick in the stale air of the corridor. Marcus reacted instantly, pulling Elena back against the shadowed interior wall just as the heavy footsteps halted directly outside Grant's room. The doorknob rattled once, twice, testing the latch. Fortunately, the mechanical deadbolt Elena had picked was still engaged, preventing the door from swinging fully open, but the slack in the mechanism caused a sharp metallic clatter that echoed through the small room.
Inside the darkness, Marcus held his breath, his muscles tensing for a violent confrontation. He slid his right hand inside his grappling glove, curling his fingers into a tight fist. If the guard forced the door, they would have less than two seconds to neutralize him before the facility-wide alarm grid tripped.
Outside, a low, gruff voice muttered a curse, followed by the sound of a clipboard being slapped against a thigh. The footsteps lingered for agonizing seconds before turning away, fading slowly down the hall toward the armory junction.
Elena exhaled slowly, her chest barely moving as she clutched the silver USB drive tightly in her palm. "That was too close," she whispered, her voice barely a breath.
"Patrol schedules are shifting," Marcus whispered back, his eyes fixed on the sliver of light beneath the door. "Grant is tightening the perimeter. We don't have time to go back the way we came. We need to cut through the utility maintenance shaft behind the barracks."

They didn't waste another second. Moving with absolute urgency, Elena slipped through the door first, keeping low as she scanned the empty corridor. Marcus followed closely behind, his boots making no sound on the cold concrete. They sprinted down the remaining length of the hall, taking a sharp left turn into an unlit maintenance alcove hidden behind the facility's primary electrical distribution panels.
A heavy metal access grate hung slightly ajar, leading into a narrow vertical ventilation shaft that dropped down toward the sub-basement levels. Without hesitation, Elena dropped feet first into the dark opening, her dark clothing blending seamlessly into the shadows. Marcus slid in immediately behind her, pulling the heavy grate shut just as the distant echo of a secondary security alert chimed softly through the primary corridors. They were descending deeper into the facility's mechanical core, leaving their pursuers behind, but heading straight into the unknown heart of the conspiracy.
