Chapter 6: The Midnight Audit

The digital keypad on the armory side-door glowed with a faint green light, casting an eerie luminescence across Elena’s face as she punched in a twelve-digit bypass code she had memorized three years ago in a safehouse outside Berlin. The override sequence clicked softly—a mechanical sigh of compliance—and the heavy steel door swung inward on well-oiled hinges, revealing rows of tactical vests, modular carbines, and encrypted data terminals humming quietly in the dark.
Marcus slipped through the doorway first, his black sweatpants whispering against the polished concrete floor. He moved with the effortless stealth of a predator, checking the corners of the room before motioning for Elena to follow. Inside, the air smelled of gun oil, ozone, and cold coffee from a forgotten Styrofoam cup sitting beside the primary logistics console.
"You've got three minutes before the roving patrol cycles back through the east corridor," Marcus murmured, sliding into the operator’s chair and waking the terminal with a sharp tap on the spacebar.
Elena stood guard by the heavy steel door, her hand resting naturally near her holster, her eyes fixed on the narrow sliver of light visible beneath the corridor threshold. "Focus on the red-border files. Look for transfer authorization codes originating from Department Seven."
Marcus's fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, the rhythmic clacking sounding unnaturally loud in the silent room. Lines of green hexadecimal code cascaded down the black monitor screen as he bypassed the firewall using a legacy administrative bypass key. "I'm in," he whispered, a bead of sweat tracing a slow path down his temple. "Pulling up the roster for Detachment Four... That's us."
The screen refreshed, displaying a skeletal organizational chart. But as Marcus scrolled past the standard operational headings, a series of encrypted sub-files appeared at the bottom of the directory, protected by biometric multi-factor security barriers. He clicked on the primary file labeled Operation Bleakwater.
A warning dialog box flashed red across the screen: ACCESS DENIED. LEVEL 9 CLEARANCE REQUIRED.

"They've got a hard lock on the historical logs," Marcus said, frustration tightening his jaw. "We can't open the core files without a physical override key from Grant's quarters."
Elena didn't hesitate. She stepped away from the door, her expression grim and resolute. "Then we get the key."
