The Severed Cord

Dr. Sterling stepped directly into Victoria’s path, crossing his arms. "You will not be taking this child anywhere, ma'am. This infant is in critical condition and is being prepared for immediate medical air transport for open-heart surgery."

Victoria’s posture stiffened, her eyes narrowing behind her gold-rimmed glasses. "Do not lecture me on my grandson’s welfare. My family sits on the regional hospital foundation board. I know the chief of medicine personally."

Clara stood up.

She stood fully upright, ignoring the sharp pain radiating from the bandages on her soles. She walked past Dr. Sterling and stopped three inches from Blake’s face.

Blake looked down at her, expecting the quiet, yielding woman who had spent two years trying to mold herself into the polite, silent ornament his family demanded.

Instead, he met a gaze of absolute, glacial diamond.

"You left him," Clara said. Her voice was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, resonant clarity that cut through every machine hum in the room.

"Clara, we didn't know—" Blake stammered, taking an involuntary half-step back.

"I told you he was blue," Clara said, each word hitting like a hammer. "I begged you to call an ambulance. Your mother took my phone. You walked out the door to eat salmon at a yacht club while your son’s heart was suffocating."

"We thought you were exaggerating!" Blake argued, his face flushing crimson with defensive anger. "You always make everything a crisis!"

"There is no 'we' anymore, Blake," Clara said quietly. She looked at Victoria, then back at her husband. "You didn't just fail as a father today. You proved that you are nothing more than an echo of your mother's cowardice."
