The Final Decree

That afternoon, the mail carrier delivered a certified legal envelope from the Massachusetts Commonwealth Court.

Clara sat at the wooden dining table, Oliver playing quietly in his high chair beside her, and broke the seal.

The decree was absolute:

* Full, unencumbered legal and sole physical custody awarded to Clara Linwood.

* Mandatory supervised visitation for Blake Vance contingent on two years of certified psychological rehabilitation and parenting courses (which Blake had already declined to pursue).

* A permanent protective perimeter maintained around Clara and Oliver’s primary residence.

Clara read through the legal language, feeling no surge of bitter triumph, no desire for vengeance.

She felt only an expansive, clean silence—the feeling of a ship finally clearing a rocky, treacherous reef and entering open, tranquil waters.

She signed the acknowledgment copy, slipped it back into the folder, and looked at Oliver, who was currently attempting to smear a ripe strawberry across his cheek with a wide, toothless grin.

"What do you think, Ollie?" Clara laughed, leaning over to wipe his face with a damp cloth. "Looks like we’re officially on our own."

Oliver let out a high-pitched, joyful squeal, kicking his chubby legs against the high chair.
