The Blue Horizon / Chapter 14 / 15

The Harbor Walk

By evening, the coastal tide was at its highest, turning the tidal marsh into a mirror of liquid gold beneath the setting sun.

Clara strapped Oliver into an ergonomic front carrier, wrapping a light cotton cardigan around both of them against the cooling ocean breeze. She slipped on a pair of comfortable leather sandals and walked down the wooden boardwalk leading to the public harbor.

The harbor was alive with the gentle, unpretentious rhythm of working life: fishermen untangling lobster nets, children eating ice cream cones on the wooden benches, and sailboats gliding gracefully past the stone breakwater.

Nobody here knew what a Vance was. Nobody cared about trust funds, private club rosters, or inherited pedestals.

An old fisherman named Captain Joe waved to Clara from his trawler as she passed. "Fine evening for a walk, Clara! That boy of yours is getting bigger every week!"

"He’s eating enough for three, Joe!" Clara called back with a genuine, effortless laugh.

She stopped at the end of the pier, looking out over the Atlantic. The horizon stretched out infinitely, unbroken by high iron gates or suburban walls. The air smelled of salt, wild beach rose, and clean, unpolluted freedom.
