Chapter 14 - The Return to the Counter

The heavy oak doors of the Sterling Group headquarters closed behind the disgraced influencer as she walked out into the cool evening air, her smartphone tucked away, her digital empire reduced to ash. Inside the private executive office, the tension that had gripped the room for hours finally dissipated, replaced by a quiet, steady calm.
“It is finished, Mr. Sterling,” Marcus announced, sealing his leather briefcase with a crisp, mechanical snap. “The stipulation is signed, the legal filings are adjusted, and our PR department has issued a final, definitive statement closing the chapter on this entire episode.”
Arthur nodded slowly, his weathered hand resting affectionately on the curved handle of his wooden cane. He looked across the mahogany desk toward his granddaughter. “Well, Mia. The storm has passed. The cafe will open tomorrow morning just as it always does. Do you still intend to wear that apron?”
Mia looked down at her crisp white shirt and tan uniform, smoothing a minor wrinkle from the fabric with a calm, deliberate motion. A subtle, genuine smile touched the corners of her mouth.
“More than ever, Grandfather,” Mia replied without a moment's hesitation. “The ground floor is where the real world happens. I wouldn't trade it for a corner office on the fiftieth floor for all the coffee in the district.”
Arthur let out a deep, rumbling laugh—a warm, hearty sound that filled the mahogany office with genuine joy. “That is my girl,” he murmured, standing up slowly with the aid of his cane. “Come. Let us go downstairs. The evening shift is starting, and I believe I owe myself a properly brewed espresso—made by your own hands.”
As grandfather and granddaughter walked side by side out of the executive suite and down toward the ground floor, the downtown cafe was slowly filling with the warm, inviting aroma of freshly roasted beans and steamed milk. The pendant lights cast a soft, golden glow across the polished marble counter where the morning’s chaos had begun.
The regular patrons sat at their usual tables, chatting quietly beneath the hum of the espresso machine. No one whispered about viral videos, no one held up a glowing smartphone screen to capture a fake reality, and no one rushed past the quiet dignity of honest, hard work.

Mia stepped smoothly behind the marble counter, tying her dark hair back into its tight, practical knot. She wiped the surface clean with a single, methodical sweep of her cotton rag, leaving the stone gleaming under the warm lights.
