Chapter 1 - The Broken Cup

The marble counter gleamed under the warm pendant lights of the downtown cafe, reflecting the harsh blue glow of a smartphone screen held dangerously close to a young woman’s face. Mia wiped the dark brown puddle of espresso away with a methodical, calm swipe of her rag. Her dark hair was pulled back tightly, and her crisp white shirt remained spotless despite the mess.
“This is completely unacceptable!” the blonde woman in the champagne-colored satin blouse shrieked, holding her phone up as if filming a crime scene. “Where's your manager? You're completely incompetent! You should be fired immediately!”
Mia paused for a fraction of a second, breathing out a quiet, restrained sigh. She looked up with steady, unbroken eye contact, refusing to shrink away from the camera lens hovering inches from her nose.
“I am very sorry about the spill, ma’am,” Mia said softly, her voice remarkably even. “I am replacing your drink right now, and I will gladly have the counter cleaned and sanitized in a few seconds.”
“Don’t give me that passive-aggressive attitude!” the blonde snapped back, her facial muscles tightening into an ugly snarl as she waved the phone closer. “I am going to completely ruin this place online! My hundreds of thousands of followers are going to know exactly how terribly you treat paying customers!”
“You are welcome to record whatever you wish,” Mia replied, her expression carefully neutral. “However, shouting at the staff and blocking the register is interfering with the other customers who are waiting patiently in line.”
“Oh, look at you trying to play the victim!” the influencer sneered, stepping closer and thrusting the phone forward. “You have zero work ethic and zero respect. You’re nothing more than a glorified cleaner, and I’ll make sure you never work in this industry again!”

The cafe fell dead silent as patrons watched the spectacle unfold. At that exact moment, the brass bell above the front door chimed softly, announcing the entrance of a distinguished older man leaning heavily on a dark wooden cane. He wore a heavy black coat that smelled faintly of winter rain, his silver hair neatly combed back. He surveyed the chaotic scene with sharp, discerning eyes, taking in the trembling phone, the spilled coffee, and the furious blonde. Before anyone could utter another word, the older man stepped forward, his gaze locked directly on the screen of the influencer's phone.
