Chapter 8 - The Kitchen Chase

The heavy service door slammed shut behind Julian with a resounding bang that echoed down the stainless-steel corridors of the hotel kitchen.
Agent Miller cursed under his breath, sprinting after him with heavy, calculated strides.
Clara and Eleanor stood frozen in the center of the ballroom, the surreal contrast between the ruined wedding reception and the sudden violence of the chase hanging heavily in the air.
“He’s never going to make it out of the building,” Eleanor stated blankly, staring at the closed service door as if watching a ghost.
“All the exterior exits are locked for private security protocols.”
“Julian was never good at logistics,” Clara replied, walking slowly toward the edge of the tiered white wedding cake.
She reached out and plucked the diamond brooch she had thrown earlier out of the sticky white frosting, wiping it clean with a linen napkin.
Margaret sank back down into the velvet armchair, breathing heavily, her face drained of all color.
“Eleanor,” Margaret whispered, holding out a shaking hand toward her granddaughter.
“Call our primary counsel. Tell him to wake up the senior partners immediately. We need to contest that asset freeze before the morning markets open.”
Eleanor looked down at her grandmother, the realization finally dawning on her that their entire empire was built on a house of cards that had just collapsed.
“Grandmother... there are no senior partners left,” Eleanor said softly, her voice trembling.
“Arthur was managing our entire legal defense reserve through those exact same offshore accounts.”
Clara turned around, holding the sparkling diamond brooch in the palm of her hand, catching the harsh reflection of the crystal chandelier overhead.
“You trusted men who valued power above loyalty,” Clara said, her tone devoid of triumph, carrying only a profound, heavy sadness.
“And in the end, they traded your entire family name for a temporary illusion of control.”
Before Eleanor could retort, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen hallway, followed by the sound of shattering glass and a muffled shout of pain.
Clara and Eleanor exchanged a quick, startled glance before walking rapidly toward the service doors, pushing them open to investigate.
The industrial kitchen was a scene of utter chaos; stainless-steel prep tables were overturned, flour dusted the black-and-white tiled floor like snow, and Julian was pinned flat against a walk-in freezer door by Agent Miller.
Julian’s tuxedo was completely ruined, covered in spilled flour and tomato sauce, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.

“It’s over, Julian,” Miller stated calmly, pressing the cold steel cuffs onto Julian’s other wrist with practiced efficiency.
