Chapter 4 - Federal Intrigue

The two federal agents walked with deliberate, unhurried steps toward the center of the ballroom, parting the stunned crowd of elites with quiet authority.

Julian’s face turned the color of ash as he recognized the insignia on their lapels.

“Agent Miller,” Julian breathed, his knees visibly weakening beneath the black tuxedo trousers.

“There must be some terrible administrative misunderstanding here.”

Agent Miller did not acknowledge Julian’s greeting; instead, he stopped directly in front of Clara and nodded respectfully.

“Thank you for your cooperation tonight, Ms. Vance. Your forensic accountants provided the exact ledger entries we needed to secure the emergency seizure warrants.”

Clara gave a slight, formal nod in return, brushing a remaining speck of dry red wine off the lapel of her green evening dress.

“Justice does not sleep just because there is an open bar, Agent Miller,” Clara replied evenly.

Eleanor crossed her arms defensively, glaring at the federal agents before shifting her furious gaze back to Julian.

“Are you telling me that my wedding day is actually a federal sting operation?” Eleanor demanded, her voice trembling with restrained fury.

“You invited hundreds of my family members and business associates here just to watch your life implode?”

“I did not plan this timing, Eleanor, I swear to God,” Julian pleaded, raising his hands in a gesture of total surrender.

“Clara manipulated the schedule to maximize the public humiliation.”

“I merely refused to let you steal another million dollars before signing your marriage certificate,” Clara countered sharply, turning to face him directly.

“You thought my silence during the board meetings meant weakness. You forgot that I am the one who hired you, and I am the one who can erase you.”

Margaret stepped forward, pushing herself between Julian and the federal agents with surprising physical strength for a woman of seventy.

“Agent Miller,” Margaret commanded with absolute authority.

“Before you place handcuffs on anyone in this room, I demand to know the exact extent of this financial exposure concerning the Sterling family trusts.”

Agent Miller pulled a folded document from his breast pocket and handed it to the elderly matriarch.

“Every single trust fund managed by Julian over the past three years has been systematically drained, Mrs. Sterling,” Miller stated clearly.

“And the primary beneficiary of those unauthorized transfers is not Julian, nor is it your family.”

Margaret unfolded the paper, scanned the top line, and let out a sharp gasp before dropping her cane.
