Chapter 2 - The Foundation Crumbles

Eleanor grabbed Julian’s arm, her perfectly manicured fingernails digging sharply into the black wool of his tuxedo sleeve.

“What is she talking about, Julian? Tell me she is lying right now,” Eleanor demanded, her voice rising in panic as the surrounding guests began to murmur among themselves.

Julian pulled his arm away, avoiding eye contact with his bride while casting a pleading glance toward Clara.

“Clara, please, let us not discuss business matters tonight,” Julian stammered, sweating visibly under the harsh ballroom lights.

“This is supposed to be a celebration of our future, not a hostile corporate takeover.”

“Future?” Clara stepped closer, completely ignoring the sticky champagne drying on her skin.

“You do not have a future, Julian. You mortgaged your soul years ago, and tonight, the loan officially comes due.”

Margaret, the seventy-year-old matriarch in the elegant black dress and heavy pearl necklace, slowly walked over, tapping her cane sharply against the polished marble floor.

“Enough of this disgraceful children’s theater,” Margaret commanded, her voice carrying the heavy weight of decades of accumulated wealth and unyielding authority.

“Julian, you swore to me during the private trust negotiations that your financial standing was completely independent of outside entanglements.”

“Grandmother, listen to me, I can explain everything,” Julian pleaded, stepping toward the older woman.

“Clara is simply bitter because our professional relationship ended.”

“Professional relationship?” Eleanor shrieked, finally dropping the champagne flute to the floor where it shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.

“She just said the venue belongs to her! Julian, did you pay for this wedding using her money?”

Clara pulled a slim leather folder from beneath her arm, opening it to reveal a series of legally binding documents signed in black ink.

“Not just the venue, Eleanor,” Clara said calmly.

“Every single bottle of champagne, the caterers, the band, and even the tuxedo he is wearing right now were purchased using corporate funds embezzled from my venture capital firm.”

Julian lunged forward, attempting to snatch the folder out of Clara’s hands, but a heavy hand grabbed his shoulder from behind, stopping him dead in his tracks.
