Chapter 11 - Unforeseen Liabilities

Clara turned a page in the manila folder, her eyes narrowing as she read a handwritten addendum attached to the back of the legal settlement.

“What is this?” Clara asked, pointing a manicured finger at the bottom of the page.

Eleanor let out a tired, dry laugh, resting her elbows on her knees and burying her face in her hands.

“That, Clara, is the final surprise left behind by my dear brother before the federal marshals took him away.”

Clara read the paragraph twice, her breath catching in her throat as the legal implications of the text registered in her mind.

“This lists a secondary shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a serious whisper.

“And it controls the intellectual property rights to your mother’s medical foundation.”

“Which means,” Eleanor continued, finally looking up with tired, red-rimmed eyes, “that even after we liquidate every personal asset, every piece of real estate, and every corporate trust, we still don't legally own the patents that fund your research.”

Clara closed the folder sharply, the sound echoing loudly in the quiet courthouse lobby.

“Arthur didn't just embezzle funds,” Clara realized with sudden, chilling clarity.

“He systematically stripped the operational foundation out from under both of our families to create a financial hostage situation.”

Eleanor stood up slowly, pulling her black trench coat tighter around her shoulders against the morning chill seeping through the glass doors.

“My family name is permanently ruined, my wedding is a federal crime scene headline, and I am legally broke,” Eleanor said quietly.

“And you still don't have the patents you need to save your company’s next major drug trial.”

Before Clara could respond, a burly federal marshal walked over from the security gates, holding a secure tablet computer in his hand.

“Ms. Vance?” the marshal asked formally.

“You have an urgent video conference request coming in from the federal penitentiary holding facility. It’s Arthur Sterling.”

Clara stood up, smoothing down her blazer with absolute composure.

“Put him through on my encrypted terminal,” Clara instructed the marshal without hesitation.

Eleanor watched her with a mixture of apprehension and morbid curiosity.

“What could he possibly want to say to us now?” Eleanor asked, stepping closer to Clara as the marshal gestured toward a private consultation booth.

“Only one way to find out,” Clara replied calmly, walking toward the secure terminal.
