Chapter 14 - The Server Room Breach

The digital countdown clock projected onto the wall of the secure server room read 23:45:10, casting a harsh, flickering blue glow across the rows of towering mainframe racks.

Clara stood in front of the primary terminal, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with frantic speed, while Agent Miller stood guard by the heavy steel entrance door.

Eleanor watched the progress bar on the monitor crawl agonizingly forward: 87%... 88%... 89%.

“The firewall encryption is much stronger than we anticipated,” Clara said, a thin sheen of sweat glistening on her forehead as she executed a complex command line override.

“Arthur routed the primary data packets through three separate redundant proxy servers in Zurich.”

“If we don't breach the main routing table within the next five minutes, the automated deletion script will execute across all backup nodes,” Eleanor warned, staring at the flashing red warning light on the console.

“I know,” Clara replied calmly, refusing to let panic affect her precision.

“I am bypassing his biometric verification requirement by using the foundational administrator credentials your grandfather registered back when the company was first incorporated.”

Outside the server room door muffled shouts echoed down the concrete hallway as federal technicians attempted to stabilize the fluctuating power grid feeding the facility.

Agent Miller checked his service weapon, keeping his eyes fixed on the heavy security door.

“Hurry up, ladies,” Miller called back over his shoulder.

“The auxiliary generators are overloading from the surge, and we are about to lose total grid connectivity.”

The progress bar on the monitor jumped suddenly: 95%... 98%... 100%.

A soft, melodic chime rang out from the terminal speakers, followed by a bright green checkmark appearing in the center of the screen.

“Access granted,” Clara whispered, exhaling a long, steady breath she didn't realize she had been holding.

She immediately clicked the archive button, downloading the entire clinical database onto an encrypted physical drive plugged directly into the console.

Eleanor let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, leaning against a cold server rack as the immediate threat evaporated.

“You actually beat him,” Eleanor said softly, looking at Clara with genuine admiration.

“Arthur spent a decade building that digital cage, and you dismantled it in less than an hour.”

Clara pulled the encrypted drive out of the terminal port and held it safely in the palm of her hand.

“He built a cage of lies, Eleanor,” Clara said quietly, turning off the monitor.

“And lies always collapse under the weight of the truth.”
