Chapter 1 - The Splashed Truth

“Maybe now you'll finally understand where you belong,” Eleanor sneered, her hand still frozen mid-air after throwing the vintage champagne directly across Clara’s face.

Clara stood motionless beneath the crystal chandelier, droplets of golden liquid mixing with expensive red wine already drying on her cheek.

She did not flinch, nor did she scream or wipe her face.

She simply looked straight into Eleanor’s triumphant blue eyes with a chilling, unsettling calmness.

Julian stepped forward from the shadows of the tiered white wedding cake, his black tuxedo slightly rumpled, his expression a mask of manufactured guilt and suppressed panic.

“Eleanor, stop this right now,” Julian muttered, his voice barely louder than a nervous whisper.

“You are making a public scene that we cannot easily undo.”

“A scene?” Eleanor laughed, a sharp, brittle sound that echoed through the silent, expensive ballroom.

“Julian, your mistress crashed my wedding reception wearing the same color as the floral arrangements. She needed a reality check, and I just delivered it in front of our entire social circle.”

Arthur, standing a few feet away with a glass of scotch, watched the spectacle with cold indifference, refusing to intervene.

Clara finally turned her head toward Julian, the wine and champagne dripping from her jawline onto the expensive green evening dress.

She slowly raised her hand, unclipped a heavy diamond brooch pinned near her collarbone, and let it drop onto the pristine white frosting of the wedding cake, puncturing the gold ribbon trim.

“You always were terrible at hiding your tracks, Julian,” Clara said, her voice steady and entirely devoid of emotion.

“And you forgot to mention to your wealthy bride that this entire venue, this catering company, and the foundation funding your precious marriage are registered entirely under my name.”

Eleanor’s smile vanished instantly, color draining rapidly from her face as she looked from Clara to Julian.

Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror as he stared at the diamond brooch sinking slowly into the wedding cake.
