Chapter 15

The state trooper slammed open the rear door of the cruiser, his hand hovering over his holster as he stared into the empty back seat. The window on the opposite side had been rolled down using an emergency override toggle, and the handcuffs lay discarded and empty on the floorboards.

"She's gone!" the trooper yelled, drawing his weapon and scanning the dense perimeter tree line. "She slipped the cuffs and bolted toward the northern ridge!"

Agent Vance didn't even flinch. He slipped his phone back into his trench coat pocket with a calm, deliberate motion. "Let her run, officer. The perimeter is fully secured by federal units two miles out. She has nowhere left to go."

True to his word, less than three minutes later, a pair of federal black-and-whites converged from the northern service road, their headlights flashing against the dense foliage. A moment later, two federal agents escorted Elena out from the treeline. Her black top was torn, her slicked-back dark hair was wild and disheveled, and her aggressive expression had finally dissolved into a hollow, defeated stare as she was pushed firmly into the back of a secure transport van.

Julian stood up from the medical chair, taking a deep, steady breath of the fresh morning air that now carried the scent of rain rather than smoke and ash. He walked over to Clara, kneeling down beside her chair and taking both of her hands in his.

"Are you ready to leave this place, Clara?" Julian asked, his voice steady, clear, and completely devoid of the shadow that had haunted him for his entire life.

Clara smiled, the color returning fully to her cheeks as she looked past the ruined facade of the manor toward the open highway beyond the iron gates.

"I've never been more ready for anything in my life," Clara whispered, squeezing his hands back with fierce warmth.

Sarah stood nearby, wiping the last of the soot from her uniform and offering a soft, genuine smile. "I'll pack the remaining bags from the guest lodge, Mr. Vance. Though I think we can safely leave the keys behind."

"Leave them," Julian agreed, standing up and wrapping one arm securely around Clara's shoulders while pushing the medical chair forward.

Together, Julian, Clara, and Sarah walked down the long gravel driveway, passing through the open wrought-iron gates for the very last time. Behind them, the smoldering ruins of the Vance estate slowly faded into the background, a monument to a fallen empire built on greed and deception.

As they reached the paved highway where the morning sun broke fully through the dispersing clouds, a gentle breeze swept across the valley, carrying away the last traces of smoke and ushering in a quiet, beautiful new beginning where they could finally start writing their own story.
