Chapter 13

The heat was becoming unbearable, stripping the oxygen from the tiny vault alcove and making every breath feel like inhaling molten glass. Julian pressed his back hard against the solid concrete wall behind the safe, shielding the leather-bound ledger and the vital bank certificates with his own body.
Through the roaring wall of fire blocking the hallway, a sudden beam of intense white light cut through the smoke.
"Vance! Can you hear me?!" Agent Vance’s voice echoed down the corridor, muffled by a heavy industrial respirator.
"Here!" Julian tried to shout, but the thick smoke turned the sound into a harsh, rattling cough.
A moment later, a heavy fire extinguisher canister came hurtling through the flames, crashing onto the concrete floor near Julian's boots. Following closely behind it, Agent Vance stepped into the burning corridor, wearing a full thermal rescue suit and dragging a high-pressure foam hose connected to the exterior mobile unit.
Agent Vance opened the valve with a sharp twist, unleashing a thick blanket of chemical retardant that blasted the advancing wall of blue flames back down the hallway.
"Grab my shoulder!" Agent Vance commanded, hooking an arm around Julian's belt and dragging him forcefully out of the alcove as the remaining timber overhead groaned and began to splinter completely.
Julian didn't hesitate. He kept his grip iron-clad around the leather ledger, using his free arm to support the federal agent as they stumbled backward through the rapidly cooling foam and smoke.
They burst out of the smoking cellar entrance just as the entire first-floor terrace collapsed inward with a massive roar, sending a final, towering cloud of ash and dust billowing into the clear sky.
Julian fell to his knees on the grass outside, gasping for fresh air, his shirt torn and blackened, his skin covered in soot and minor burns.
Sarah rushed forward instantly, helping him up while Clara, sitting upright in a borrowed medical chair brought by the state trooper, reached out with shaking hands to touch his face.
"You're alive," Clara sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on his cheeks. "You actually made it out."
Julian nodded slowly, holding up the heavy leather ledger for them to see. "I got the original records. Every offshore account, every forged signature, every hidden asset. It's all here."

Agent Vance pulled off his respirator, wiping sweat from his forehead as he looked down at the documents in Julian's hands. He turned his head toward the police cruiser where Elena sat handcuffed in the back seat, watching them with an expression of pure, unadulterated defeat.
"Well, Mr. Vance," Agent Vance said, pulling out his phone to make the final call to the federal prosecutor's office. "It looks like the Vance dynasty has finally come to an end. But as for what happens next... you might want to look at the very last page of that ledger."
