Chapter 1

Elena stood over Clara with the small crystal cup pressed against trembling lips, her dark hair slicked back rigidly. The old woman's jaw was locked, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving fire that brooked no resistance. Beneath the towering crystal chandelier, Clara’s pregnant frame looked terribly fragile in her light cream-colored dress.
"Drink it," Elena commanded, her voice dropping into a harsh, metallic register that echoed off the high ceiling. "You think you can ruin everything we built over decades? Swallow it right now."
Clara tried to pull her head back, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "Please, Elena," she whimpered, her hands gripping the armrests of her wheelchair. "It will hurt the baby. I swear I didn't tell Julian anything about the offshore accounts."
"Liar," Elena hissed, tilting the cup upward with brutal efficiency, forcing the bitter, dark liquid past Clara's teeth. "You signed your own death warrant the moment you married into this family."
Before Clara could swallow more than a few drops, Clara’s maid, Sarah, burst into the foyer from the side corridor. Her grey uniform was slightly rumpled, her face pale with raw panic. Sarah threw herself forward, grabbing Elena’s thin, sinewy arm with both hands.
"Stop!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with desperation. "She didn't do anything wrong! Leave her alone!"
Elena stumbled back, but the damage was already done. Clara’s head lolled backward, her eyelids fluttering shut as she slumped completely unconscious in the wheelchair.
Before Sarah could reach for Clara, the sudden jolt of the chair sent it spinning out of control. It rolled backward down the grand marble hallway, picking up speed as it careened toward the double wooden doors.

The wheelchair slammed hard into the baseboard, violently tipping over and throwing the unconscious pregnant woman onto the cold, hard marble floor. A scattered cloud of legal papers fluttered down around her motionless body.
As Sarah screamed in horror and rushed toward Clara, the massive double wooden doors slowly swung inward with a heavy creak. Julian stepped into the hallway, holding his leather briefcase, his tailored grey double-suited shoulders freezing as his eyes took in the horrific scene on the floor. Elena slowly turned around, her face instantly draining of all color as she stared directly at her son in absolute shock.
