Chapter 11

The secondary blast blew the heavy iron cellar doors completely off their hinges, sending a shower of rusted metal and thick, acrid smoke shooting outward across the lawn. The force of the explosion shook the ground beneath Julian and Clara, sending a fresh wave of panic through the small group gathered on the driveway.
Sarah screamed, throwing her arms over her head as debris rained down around them. Agent Vance stopped walking toward his sedan, turning sharply to stare at the newly opened underground entrance from which a strange, chemical-blue flame was now licking upward.
"That wasn't a standard electrical fire," Agent Vance muttered, releasing Elena’s arm for a split second as he unclipped his radio. "That was a volatile chemical accelerant. She rigged the entire foundation to blow."
Elena laughed from the back seat of the cruiser, her voice muffled through the tinted glass, though her manic satisfaction was unmistakable.
Julian stood up slowly, his eyes fixed on the dark, smoking abyss of the cellar. He remembered his wife’s whispered words just moments before. The ledger... she hid the original papers in the basement safe behind the portrait.
"Julian, no!" Clara cried out, using her remaining strength to grab the hem of his trousers. "It's a trap! If she rigged the basement, the whole structure is going to collapse!"
"If I don't get those physical ledgers before the chemical fire reaches the lower vault, the federal prosecutors won't have the hard-copy signatures needed to freeze the international accounts," Julian said, his voice grim and resolute. He looked down at Sarah. "Watch her. Do not let her move from this tarp."
"Mr. Vance, you can't go down there!" Sarah pleaded, tears streaming down her soot-stained face. "It's suicide!"
Julian didn't hesitate. He stripped off his ruined suit jacket completely, tore a strip of white fabric from his torn shirtsleeve to wrap around his mouth and nose, and sprinted directly toward the smoking cellar entrance.
Agent Vance jogged over to the edge of the pit, shining a tactical flashlight down into the darkness. "Vance! The support beams are already compromised! You have less than three minutes before the main floor caves in!"
Julian dropped into the smoky darkness, his boots hitting the concrete floor with a heavy thud. The air down here was thick, suffocating, and reeked of industrial solvents and burnt paper. He flicked on his smartphone flashlight, its weak beam cutting through the dense gray haze to reveal rows of wine racks and iron security doors lining the corridor.

He navigated blindly through the maze of smoke, coughing violently as the toxic fumes burned his lungs. At the very end of the corridor hung the massive oil portrait of his grandfather—the patriarch who had built the family empire on a foundation of ruthless deception.
Julian grabbed the heavy wooden frame of the portrait and yanked it off the wall with a fierce roar, revealing a heavy steel wall safe embedded deep into the concrete foundation.
